Letterboxing Northeast Local Letterboxes X
Gamelan(Confirmed missing, a victim of brush clearing, July 2003)
(Placed for the Fall 2001 Letterbox Gathering: there is a fee for parking in the summer season) There are two entrances off Rte. 1 in Charlestown RI to Burlingame State Park. The "southern" one leads to the campground and the "northern" one, just opposite Ninigret Park, leads to a swimming beach and picnic pavillion. At this picnic beach, place 44, 45, & 46 in direct line, and look under stone.
(A tag-along letterbox)

Note: "Wildlife Management Area" is a euphemism for Hunting
Zone. These areas are not safe for letterboxing during hunting season
from Monday through Saturday. We do not recommend letterboxing here even
on Sundays during the hunting season. This is not a multi-use area and
hunters are not welcoming of hikers, bikers, birders, or boxers during
their season. Part of the Alice in Wonderland Series, at a yellow brick road near you. Clues at: http://www.geocities.com/trishkri/Oz.html

Staying with the main trail, you'll next come upon a field on the left with good eastern exposure. In the southwest corner a big pine stands out. Just behind, in the far side of the low stone wall, lives In The Line of Duty.

Under construction...the ferry landing, that is. The letterbox has been in our trunk ready to go for years.
(March '06: Temporarily removed for maintenance. To tell you the truth, we're surprised that it has lasted this long, since it's at one of those teen party spots. That is due to the excellent care people have taken to rehide it well. Thank you to our wonderful finders!) Single box on an easy quarter-mile loop, one of our
favorite stamps. West Farms Land Trust: Avery Tract One of a series found at: West Farms Land Trust: The Woodlands A single letterbox on an easy one mile loop trail, about 45 minutes. From I-95 in Waterford, CT, take exit 82. Turn north on Rte. 85 and pass by the malls and Cross Rd, turning right at the stoplight at Douglas Rd. Follow Douglas to the stop sign and go straight across onto Greentree Dr. At the end of Greentree, you'll see the trail sign straight ahead: park in the residential area. From I-395 in Waterford, take exit 77 and turn south on Rte. 85. Take the first left at the stoplight at Douglas Rd. Follow Douglas to the stop sign and go straight across onto Greentree Dr. At the end of Greentree, you'll see the trail sign straight ahead: park in the residential area. Hike east into the Woodlands and go straight at the intersection for a clockwise loop around this lovely preservation area. We were delighted to see chestnut trees, a rarity in this area. Follow a stone fence until bending southwards. At the next intersection (an alternate entrance via the popular MTB/ATV trails at Old Barry Farm), turn right and follow the trail southwest to soon find another stone wall. Before stepping through, notice a fallen tree to the east about 6 steps away. The Woodlands Letterbox is just beyond the stump, mid-high in the wall. Now continue on the trail, looping west past some great ledge to the intersection at the beginning. A left will bring you back home.
