Local Letterboxes X

Gamelan

(Confirmed missing, a victim of brush clearing, July 2003)

Bosun's Box (Retired)

Great Gathering

(Placed for the Fall 2001 Letterbox Gathering: there is a fee for parking in the summer season)

There are two entrances off Rte. 1 in Charlestown RI to Burlingame State Park. The "southern" one leads to the campground and the "northern" one, just opposite Ninigret Park, leads to a swimming beach and picnic pavillion.

At this picnic beach, place 44, 45, & 46 in direct line, and look under stone.

And Then There Were Three

(A tag-along letterbox)

"Three score twice is a century and twenty
To be together that long, there must be love aplenty."

If you don't get LOTS finding your way aCROSS
To a certain PRESERVE you'll think you're the boss:

Stroll back up to the lane and walk on down
the lower path, heading SSW.
Drop downhill past a big glacial erratic
and through the wood-pile field.

Then straight you'll go
through another, smaller field.
Pass through the large-stoned wall
to an old orchard,
and just to the east
spot an abandoned gate
and Alexis' Stone.

Now, inside the stone fenced corner,
11 GIANT steps south
to the multi-trunked swamp maple
(there are 7 trunks this winter and
the whole place has the fragrance of candles).

In the top of this stone wall:
And Then There Were Three.

Emerald City

Note: "Wildlife Management Area" is a euphemism for Hunting Zone. These areas are not safe for letterboxing during hunting season from Monday through Saturday. We do not recommend letterboxing here even on Sundays during the hunting season. This is not a multi-use area and hunters are not welcoming of hikers, bikers, birders, or boxers during their season.
CT Hunting Regulations
CT Hunting Season Specifics

Generally, Sept 15th through Jan 31st.

(Another tag-along, this one in Scotland CT)

Enjoy finding Dan & Melissa's stunning Spignesi Wildlife Management Area Letterbox

Returning uphill, you'll soon pass by an s-curve with fine stone walls and a path leading south toward cedar. Staying with the main trail, you'll next come upon a field on the left with good eastern exposure.

In the southwest corner a big pine stands out. Just behind, in the far side of the low stone wall, lives In The Line of Duty.

Fort Shantok

(Confirmed missing in July 2003)

Chester-Hadlyme Ferry

Under construction...the ferry landing, that is. The letterbox has been in our trunk ready to go for years.

Jordan Mill

(March '06: Temporarily removed for maintenance. To tell you the truth, we're surprised that it has lasted this long, since it's at one of those teen party spots. That is due to the excellent care people have taken to rehide it well. Thank you to our wonderful finders!)

Single box on an easy quarter-mile loop, one of our favorite stamps.

At Jordan Green in Waterford Connecticut, at the junction of CT Rte. 156 and 213 (Rope Ferry Rd and Great Neck Rd), drive due south on Rte. 213 North a short way. Soon turn right on Trumbull Rd (Governor's Landing). Just before the mailbox for #17, turn right down the long driveway to the parking area.

Hike downhill to the dam, waterfall, and bridge. Walk downstream on the path to the end, and then bear left uphill on wide stairs. Pass behind a house and when you're about even with the deck, turn left on a faint but wide path.

A short way along you'll come to a line of boulders on the right, with one perched pointing to the sky. Take 12 steps in to find the Jordan Mill Letterbox under the southeast corner of a large, flat, waist-high rock. Since this is a bit of a local hangout, please be sure to rehide extra well.

A few steps further along the path will bring you home.

West Farms Land Trust: The Woodlands

A single letterbox on an easy one mile loop trail, about 45 minutes.

From I-95 in Waterford, CT, take exit 82. Turn north on Rte. 85 and pass by the malls and Cross Rd, turning right at the stoplight at Douglas Rd. Follow Douglas to the stop sign and go straight across onto Greentree Dr. At the end of Greentree, you'll see the trail sign straight ahead: park in the residential area.

From I-395 in Waterford, take exit 77 and turn south on Rte. 85. Take the first left at the stoplight at Douglas Rd. Follow Douglas to the stop sign and go straight across onto Greentree Dr. At the end of Greentree, you'll see the trail sign straight ahead: park in the residential area.

Hike east into the Woodlands and go straight at the intersection for a clockwise loop around this lovely preservation area. We were delighted to see chestnut trees, a rarity in this area. Follow a stone fence until bending southwards.

At the next intersection (an alternate entrance via the popular MTB/ATV trails at Old Barry Farm), turn right and follow the trail southwest to soon find another stone wall. Before stepping through, notice a fallen tree to the east about 6 steps away. The Woodlands Letterbox is just beyond the stump, mid-high in the wall.

Now continue on the trail, looping west past some great ledge to the intersection at the beginning. A left will bring you back home.
