Bacons In American Revolution

The following is a table of combatants in the American Revolution from the lower Massachusetts area, who all had the surname Bacon, and who were all descended from Michael Bacon of Dedham Massachusetts, one of the nation's 20,000 earliest settlers in 1636. Numbers in the first column represent the index number for these individuals in Thomas Baldwin's 1915 book: Bacon Genealogy: Michael Bacon of Dedham, and his Descendants (Reprints available from Higginson Book Company, Salem Massachusetts) Columns marked Generation 2, Generation 3, etc, show the line of ancestry back to Michael Bacon (Generation 1). Red names represent those who were killed in battle or who died later of their wounds. Note in particular John Bacon, who was among the first to die in a skirmish following the battle of Lexington at Menotomy (now Arlington), April 19, 1775. There, he and 8 others from Dedham were flanked by retreating British, and wiped out against a stone wall at the Jason Russell farm, possibly executed after capture. A monument to the Lexington dead in Arlington lists John Bacon first. His son, Moses, died in Skeensboro, Canada, while pursuing the British forces there. My great great great great grandfather Joseph Bacon is not listed on the military rolls. His brother, 274 David, died, presumably of wounds in 1776, after numerous battles. The listed commanders are only the direct supervisors (lieutenants and captains) of their first campaign. It was typical for revolutionaries to serve in numerous regiments during the course of the war, at intermittent times.
