About Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School has 475 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. It is the goal of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School to provide a nurturing Catholic-Christian environment where all students have the opportunity to grow spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually. The size of our school allows us to offer a variety of programs and opportunities to our students within a warm, family style learning environment.

Our Program

Spiritual Life

Prayer and Catholic-Christian values are at the heart of everything that we do at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School. Students in grades three through eight attend Mass weekly. Students in pre-kindergarten through second grade attend Mass every first Friday of the month and on special occasions. Students also participate in many special religious services throughout the year. Rosary, Stations of the Cross, May Crowning, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation are but a few.

Special Subjects and Programs

All students in grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade study computers, art, music, and a second language. Students in pre-k through sixth grade study Spanish, and students in seventh and eighth grade study French. Physical education programs are also a part of our curriculum. Instrumental music lessons and an after school art program are also available to students. We also offer a stimulating after school care program until 5:30 every day.

Athletics

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School believes that participation in athletics can benefit children in many ways. We offer baseball, softball, track, cheerleading, bowling, basketball, volleyball, cross-country, and skiing.

Accelerated and Remedial Reading Program

Sr. Cecelia Hooker, RSM, works with small groups of children who need academic assistance, especially in reading. She also works with primary grade students who are accelerated learners.

Math Lab

This year, we added a math lab for those students who need additional help in the area of math.

Academic Intervention Period

The time between 7:30 and 8:00 A.M. is set aside as an academic intervention period. Teachers are available to provide additional support to students who need extra assistance in any sujbect.

School Counselor

Dr. Lori Ricupito, our school counselor, is available one day each week to meet with students who may be experiencing personal, social, or academic difficulties.

Integrated Spirituality Programs

Sr. Marie Hughes, RSM, our religion coordinator, complements our daily study of religion by providing classroom presentations and discussions on spiritual life topics.

Support for Children of Divorced or Separated Parents

Banana Splits is a program that provides group support for students whose parents are either divorced or separated. This program meets weekly, and is run by professionally trained volunteers.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention

The DARE Program is offered in fifth grade. The students are engaged in professionally led activities that support drug and alcohol resistance. The students also have a DARE Club that reinforces what they learn from the program.

High School Admissions Exam Preparation

An after-school preparation class is held in October and November for our eighth graders who plan on taking the Catholic high school placement examination.

Peer Ministry

Peer ministry is a program designed to develop Christian values, social skills, and shared knowledge between two students in different grade levels. Peer ministry partners share in planned activities, projects, social activities, and prayer experiences.

Technology

Over the past three years, $32,000 in technological updates have been added to the school, including the addition of high-speed internet access and new computers for our computer lab. All students in grades pre-k through eight study computers. For students in grades three through eight, technology is incorporated into their core academic subjects.
