The place name Pakala means "the sun shines." It is the name the ancient Hawaiians gave this spot and it is a most appropriate for the historic residence of Sinclair and Ethel I. Robinson of Makaweli. Sinclair, the oldest of the five children of Aubrey and Alice Gay Robinson, was the Manager of Gay & Robinson, Kauai's last sugar plantation. Sinclair married Ethel Glade in 1917 and moved into this wonderful home to raise his family. Two rooms at the back of the house comprised his offices from which he managed the plantation. The large house is well suited to entertaining, which they frequently did. However, liquor was never served, and tobacco never smoked, as was the family custom. Pakala's architecture is typical plantation-style from the early 1900s. The exterior walls are painted then coated with sand while still tacky. The interior floors are hardwood painted a deep glossy black. The living and dining room floors are topped with oriental carpets and antique furniture. The entire house has over 5,000 s/f under roof with a total of 19 rooms.

Situated on 8 acres of lawn, gardens and fruit trees, the front yard gently rolls down to a gorgeous beach and a world-class surfing spot named Infinity aka Pakala's. It also has a spectacular view of the mountains of Makaweli. This is where we stay when we’re on Kauai. Since our home sits in the middle of our ancestral lands, you enjoy the privacy and open space that is becoming all too rare in Hawaii. It is now available for vacation rental. With five bedrooms, it's perfect for up to 6 or 8 adults and a few children. Due to it’s privacy and informal atmosphere, Pakala has been host to a number of celebrities and families, some consisting of three generations.  If you are interested in spending some time at Pakala, please feel free to contact us at our e-mail address below. You will find no other property on Kauai in such a wonderfully serene and spacious setting.
