Rotaract District 1100 falls within
an area which is either South West or the South Midlands,
depending at which end of the District you are standing
in. The map to the right shows the location of our
District in relation to the rest of the UK and Ireland. Our area includes a large part of
the west of England from the north of Herefordshire, down
to North Somerset and across to Wiltshire, as well as two
clubs just across the Welsh border in Monmouthshire. The
most northerly town in the District is Leominster in
Herefordshire. This fine county, with its rolling hills
and hidden valleys, is renowned for its farming
activities, quiet charm and distinctive black and white
houses.
The largest towns in this part of the District are the
two cathedral cities of Hereford and Worcester, which
combine modern shopping areas with ancient buildings. The
medieval Mappa Mundi is on show in Hereford cathedral.
To the east of the M5 motorway, which bisects the
district, are the fine open stretches of the Cotswold
Hills. Not spectacularly high, these hills are an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty, and attract many because of
their quiet charm and the quaint villages and market
towns hidden within their hills.
Cheltenham and Gloucester are gateways to the Cotswolds.
But they have much to commend themselves for visitors.
Stately Cheltenham has fine shopping areas and still
retains a strong flavour of its Regency heyday. Nearby
Gloucester is a bustling business centre, and is also
rapidly expanding its attractions for visitors, which now
include an Advertising Museum and the British Waterways
national museum, with exhibits which include many of the
boats moored in the Docks.
Further south, just beyond the M5/M4 motorway
intersection at Almondesbury, is Bristol, sometimes
referred to as the capital of the south-west. It too, has
much of interest. The Clifton Suspension Bridge, Brunel's
proud restored steamship, the Great Britain, and the huge
annual Balloon Fiesta, are just a few of the attractions.
Currently under construction on the western edge of the
ciy is what will be Europe's largest out of town shopping
centre. And imaginative plans for the Floating Harbour
area in the centre of the City will bring new life and
new attractions of international stature.
Two fine bridges on the Bristol Channel link England and
Wales, and District 1100 has one or two Clubs in South
Wales, including Chepstow and Monmouth, which lie at each
end of the spectacular Wye Valley, one of the areas major
attractions.
To complete this quick tour of District 1100 country, we
head east along the M4 to Swindon in Wiltshire. This fast
growing high tech town is now home to some world leading
companies in many fields, including computing and
finance.
