Our Glorious History
The SouthSide Shooters NYA have been a mainstay in Philadelphia mummery and pleasing the crowds along Broad Street for close to 30 years. Led by our captains, Joey and Anthony D'urso, The SouthSide Shooters have won first prize four times in the crowded and competitive Group category of the Comic Division. To go along with our four first prize finishes, the SouthSide Shooters rarely place out of the top ten and are regular visitors to the top five. Our New Years Day performances are known for power dancing and drilling and well-constructed / eye-appealing props. Over the years, the SouthSide Shooters NYA have marched under the banners of Purul and Murray, but have found a great home in the Goodtimers Comic Club, led by Mr. Al Heller.
Many thanks go to our captains, who bear a tremendous burden year after year(to the astonishment and dismay of the members)and to our matriarch Rosie D'urso who opens her home to the the SouthSide Shooters members every year for practices, meetings, parade-week organizing, and post-parade celebrations(win or lose)and as a source of inspiration. Special thanks also go to Dawn Orlando for organizing fund raisers and a wonderful drill every year, while getting very little recognition outside of the club. Thanks also go out to the membership of the Southside Shooters NYA for being a family within a family and working so hard to have fun and hopefully win on New Years Day. On New Years Day there is one place you can be sure to see the SouthSide Shooters NYA...the winner circle.
