As a Calico Bass stared intently into my mask during a safety stop, A Self Portrait was composed by viewing my own reflection on the front element of a 16mm wide angle lens mounted on a Sea & Sea Motor Marine 2, held at arms length. |
| Becoming a certified Scuba diver in 1990 and logging over a thousand dives since. I carry a camera on every dive, as each submersion offers new photographic opportunities that I don't want to miss. |
Cameras: Like most divers I started taking pictures on my first dives with a small disposable underwater camera that most dive stores and beach shops sell, and the results were predictable. Lots of thumb and finger fish due to a lack of a real view finder, blurry close ups and no color, except blue in the images After my first few dives, I located a used Ikelite housing designed for an old Cannon AE1 , which I already owned, bought a small cheap strobe and ventured into the deep figuring that I would soon lose my trusty old Cannon to flooding. Quite a few of my favorite photographs where made using this totally manual setup. The Garibaldi is one of them. Taken with a 28mm lens stopped down to f22.
Sometime later I invested in a Sea & Sea Motor Marine 2, complete with a YS50ttl strobe and 3 lenses that I could change (and lose) while underwater. This is probably the most flexible system on the market and I recommend this system to divers that want to get into underwater photography and want to make the most of valuable dive time while on expensive diving vacations.
