The hymns presented here were familiar to Suchomski and other Polish forebears. The English
translations are by the webmaster, except for the hymns Wesol'y nam dzien' dzis' nastal'
and Serdeczna Matko. Those translations are the standard American renditions. The
webmaster's translations do not necessarily synchronize with the melodies.
According to Joseph John Parot in Polish Catholics in Chicago, 1850-1920,
"some of these pieces---such as Serdeczna Matko at the Marian devotions, Twoja Czesz
Chwal'a at 'Forty Hours,' or Witaj Królowa Nieba at requiem masses---were
intensely moving and emotional. Entire congregations, within the first few bars, were known to
weep or be uplifted as one, as if to express that mass collective sense of either joy or
sorrow which was at the heart of the Polish Catholic liturgy." [The "Forty Hours" devotion was
an extended adoration of the consecrated eucharistic bread].
