John Nelson Crouch, a son of Lewellen and Hannah (Kuhn) Crouch was born 18 November 1851, at Sugar Creek, Gallatin County, Kentucky. He was raised on a farm and did some trapping along the rivers there. He married Laura Ellen Riley, 26 September 1875, in Switzerland County, Indiana. They were married by Elias H. Bandarin, J. P.
John and Laura Crouch with their family and a large group of friends left Rising Sun, Indiana in the winter of 1900 for Oklahoma. They came by train, "the Wabash Cannon Ball". This was quite a ride, the fastest train that ran then. The weather was real cold and stormy when they left Indiana. After leaving Rising Sun, they rode east to St. Louis, Missouri. Arriving there at night, they exchanged trains in jSt. Louis for one, to reach Chandler, Oklahoma. There were 32 people to board the train together. The conducter said it was his first erperience where the whole group knew each other.
They arrived in Chandler, Oklahoma, about Christmas time, and was met by George Herbert and sons, Luke and Ollie. They had been living in Oklahoma about a year at this time. Here the weather was so warm and pretty they thought "they had gotten to heaven", in Laura Ellen's words. Here they all found shelter with the Herbert and Rood families until they found homes.
John and Laura settled with their family on a farm five miles north of Chandler, in Lincoln County, Oklahoma. In the fall of 1907, John and Lula (Crouch) Booth and daughter, Myrtle, set out with John and Laura Crouch and son, Andrew, for claims in Ellis County, Oklahoma, near the South Canadian River, about 20 miles south of Higgins, Texas. Jess, Prudie and Emma remained near Chandler until the cotton crops were gathered, then followed. They lived there until 1910, when they went back to Chandler.
Here Jess Crouch and Jess Willard put put on an exhitition fight at an old settler's reunion picnic near Chandler in 1912. Jess Crouch was age 23 at the time. Willard later became a champion boxer, though wasn't at the time. They fought to a draw, neither givng in.
John and Laura later moved back to the South Canadian River farm. As did Andy Crouch, and lived there until the time of his (John's) death on the 13th of July 1941. He is buried in the Higgins Cemetery as is Laura Ellen Crouch who died on the 22nd of of September 1946. John N. Crouch was also a drummer boy in the Civil War.

Elijah Crouch and family moved from Washington Co., TN, To Gallatin County, KY, near Warsaw, in 1830. The family cemetery they are buried in, is on what is known as the John Crouch farm. It was evidently the Elijah Crouch homeplace. There are two markers for Elijah and Sarah Crouch. A larger one evidently added years after the original. They vary, one reading Elijah Crouch - b. 4 May 1790 -, and the other one - b. 14 May. One read Sallie, wf of E. Crouch, with the above dates. The other reads Sally, wf of Elijah Crouch, d. 30 Mch. 1863, age 72 yrs, 11 mos, 18 das.

A note by Mrs. L. M. Crouch, "is a marriage bond of a Joseph Crouch and Polly Hanley, 26 Jul 1813, Washington Co., TN. Maybe far-fetched, but could the original be difficult to read, as some are, and be a misreading for "Anny Lady'?"

ELEVENTH CHILD OF JESSE AND MARY (NANCE) CROUCH
AND
DELCENA HENDRIX
ELEVENTH CHILD OF JOHN AND HANNAH (KELLY) HENDRIX
Isaac Crouch, eleventh son of Jessee and Mary (Nance) Crouch and Delcenia Hendrix were married on the 7th of January 1828, in Carter County, Tennessee. Soon after they were married, they and six other children of Jesse Crouch moved together to Kentucky. In 1830, Isaac is listed in the federal census of Owen County, Kentucky. He and Delcena lived there till 1837.
In September 1837, Isaac and Delcena were given a letter of dismissal, signed by Isaac's brother, Joseph Crouch, minister of the Popular Grove Baptist Church, in Owen County, Kentucky. This letter was given to them to take to Carter County, Tennessee, where they joined the Sinking Creek Baptist Church.
In June 1838, Isaac borrowed five hundred dollars from Delcena's uncle, Solomon Hendrix, Sr., and purchased one hundred and seventy- two acres on Flat Creek, in Jefferson County, Tennessee. John W. Moser, a mechanic, erected some machinery on this land in the fall of 1838. It is not known what Isaac had planned. Early in the fall of 1839, before Isaac had gotten a good start on this project, he died. Isaac left thirty-five year old Delcena with six sons.
Isaac's brother, Allen Crouch, who was also living in Jefferson County, Tennessee, was appointed guardian of his children. Their personal property was sold. Out of this, Delcena was given a year's support. John W. Moser made Isaac's coffin and charged the estate four dollars. It took many years and a court battle before the matter of Isaac's tract of land was settled. Solomon Hendrix, Jr., an attorney, represented his uncle, Solomon Hendrix, Sr. in securing claim to the land, which was mortgaged to the elder Solomon Hendrix.
Delcena moved her family back to Carter County, Tennessee, to live near relatives in a house on her father's property. George Emmert, husband of her oldest sister, Mary, was appointed guardian of her children. In 1847, Delcena became very ill and from her death bed she asked her two sisters, Mary and Anna, to record her wishes for her children, then aged nine to eighteen, in a nuncupative (oral) will.
We Mary Emmert and Anna Cooper do state that the nuncupative will of Delcena Crouch was made by her on her death bed a few days previous to her death, which hapened on the 11th day of June 1847 in our presants, to which we were specially required to bare witness by the testatrix herself in her own dwelling house where she had been resident for more than twelve months, and the same is to follow to wit - it was her will and desire that her effects should be disposed of after her deseace in the following manner - it was her will that her son Henderson should have the sorel horse that he claimed, and that her other sons to wit - Allen Hyter, and Isaac should have each a bed, and Jeremiah to have her Beareau and that the balance of her household and kitchen furniture be eaqually devided between her four youngest sons. and it was her will that her two sisters Mary Emmert and Anna Cooper should take care of the above named effects untill her four youngest sons became of age. And further it was her will that the ballance of the funds coming to her of her uncle Solomon Hendrix's estate be equally devided between all of her children. Made out by us this 2nd day of September 1847.

Henderson and Hendrix probably made their own way. Hendrix died of a fever, at age nineteen, in November 1849, in Washington County, Tennessee. Henderson was married in 1850 to Mary Jane Hopper, in Washington County, Tennessee. He was a Baptist minister and a skilled cabinet maker. He was killed in the Civil War. Joseph Hyter lived for a while in Arkansas, and then moved to Texas. He first lived in Collin County where his brother Isaac, Jr., lived, then he moved to Montague County, where he died before 1910.
In 1850, Allen and Joseph Hyter were living with their uncle, Jessee H. Crouch, in Washington County, Tennessee. Isaac Crouch Jr. was living with his aunt, Anna Cooper, in Carter County, Tennessee. In 1853, William Emmert, son of George Emmert who had died, was appointed guardian of the four youngest boys.
In 1854, Allen was in Carter County, Tennessee, to sell his interest in land inherited form their grandfather, John Hendrix. William Allen Crouch settled in Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas. Isaac, Jr. moved to McKinney, Collin County, Texas, where he died in 1879. Jeremiah Crouch settled in Grant Co., KY.
