Big Bend National Park deep in the SW heart of Texas

Dad, Christopher(12), Eric(10) and Kelsey(7)
hiked the 2 1/2 miles into Dog Canyon near
the entrance of Big Bend Ntl Park.  This was
around March 1997.  The weather was very
nice.  Cool mornings and warm afternoons.

Luna's Jacal.  This old shack was lived in by a
mexican couple and their 11 children in the
1930's.  It is made of stone, cement and sticks.
The roof has a cement covering.

This is the Chimneys eastern trailhead.  We're
ready to head west.  We walked the few miles
to the Chimneys, looked around for a few
hours. We got lost when we tried to complete
the one way trip to Old Maverick Road,
about 5 miles farther west.  The trail and the
markers really fade away just past the
Chimneys.  You better bring, and be ready
to use, a good map and compass for this trip.

Christopher and Eric standing next the the
Indian wall paintings (actually carvings) that
are on the north side of the farthest east
Chimney.  The circle looking thing on the
right appears to have three bullet holes in it.
We suspect that some passing US soldier
or gun carrying Indian did a little target
practice.

Here is the view from the top of one of the
Chimneys looking west.  There just aren't
many trees in the desert of Big Bend!

Here are Betsy and the kids taking the boat
ride across the Rio Grande to Boquillas Mex.
They paid a few dollars to rent some of those
horses in the background and then road into
Boquillas for a couple of hours.

Please goto these links from some pics of our hikes past the Glenn Spring Encampment
(the Chimneys) and also our trip into Sierra Castollon.
