The history of peaches in the United States begins in the late 1890's which was also the beginning of the commercial fruit industry. It is hard to imagine that Connecticut was a national leader in the peach industry. As a matter of fact, Glastonbury Connecticut is the home of Hale peaches. A very cold winter in 1917 killed most of the peach trees in the state. In true New England spirit, growers responded by planting apple trees. Peaches are the third most popular fruit grown in the US. California leads the nation in production with South Carolina and Georgia next. North Carolina places around 9th in peach production.
