TRAINING
My molly name Maggie
While I might sound braggy,
Is smarter, by far, than a horse
Thou the fact that I trained her
Never restrained her,
From having her own way of course.
My method of training
Could use some explaining.
It requires a new point of view,
That whatever she's doing
Or path she's pursuing's
The next thing I wanted her to do.
TRAINING AND BEHAVIOR
MODIFICATION
What kind of horse do you
have?
Does your horse
stand still when you catch and halter him, groom him, de-worm him, clean
his feet, while saddling and bridling? Can you mount or dismount your horse
from either side? How well do you communicate with your horse? Does your
horse really understand what you want him to do? How do you reinforce behavior
you want? When your horse gives you a superior performance, does he know
how to reproduce it consistently? How do you eliminate unwanted behavior?
Why does your horse not do what you want? Is he motivated more by negative
or positive response?
Each time we interact with our stock we are training them, giving them
either a positive or a negative experience. We are all trainers, whenever
you are with your horse, you are training him.
You may think you are just leading him out to his paddock or emptying
his water bucket or taking him out of his stall for grooming, but every
interaction has training implications.
What we will accomplish through the series of Horsemanship Clinics is
to introduce the fundamentals of horse training by modifying you and your
horse's natural behavior. We will understand that your stock are going to
make mistakes. You will learn how to correct him for his mistakes. You will
learn to show him why you want him to do certain things. These fundamentals
are a must for anyone interested in having a more positive and productive
relationship with their horse. If you want to bring out the best performance
your horse has to offer, it's worth taking some time to learn about training.
We will discuss how the horse thinks, what motivates the horse, and how and
why the horse reacts to different situations. We will demonstrate how to
train the horse using pressure and release, which teaches the horse to respect
us. Also, to help the horse learn what we want from him. We don't have to
accept and make excuses for any behavior from our stock that we don't like,
we just have to concentrate twice as hard on training him to do those things
we want to get him to change.
"I would like to present a six step program
that would assist you in handling your horse or mule
."

STEP 1
ROUND
PEN:
This session will focus on the Human being able to control the horse
at liberty, (loose no halter in a round corral.) This is a great
1st step in building a connection between Horse and Human. In
this session we can learn about the horse and human relationship. We can
learn how to direct the horse and the importance of being in Control. We
direct the horse and build confidence.
STEP 2
GROUND SCHOOL
1:
This is a hands on session with the horse on a halter and halter rope.
Our focus is to teach the horse to have patience, and be resistance free.
A this point we learn to work on ourselves and play with our horses. We build
from the first session, the round pen. The horse will learn to move correctly
and softly. The Human will learn to communicate correctly with time, feel
and balance.
STEP 3
GROUND SCHOOL 2: with a Challenge
Course
This session is designed to build confidence in the Horse and Human.
We build on the first ground school session Ground School 1 adding obstacles.
We start talking about the horses face and feet. We will be asking our horse
to pay attention to softness while watching their feet.
STEP 4
RIDING:
This session we will start to see the importance of having the horses
full attention, with a connection to his mind. We teach proper techniques
and proper riding position, starting with tack, saddle pad and saddle. Proper
fit of snaffle bit and how to use it. Proper mounting and dismounting.
STEP 5
RIDING WITH A CHALLENGE
COURSE:
This session we will travel back, review and look at the blocks we have
built. This riding prepares horse and rider to go anywhere soft, safe and
supple. We talk about what can be accomplished in arena riding as well as
trail riding. Here I build confidence and control for both Horse and Human.
I build pressure to teach the horse as well as the human correct techniques
to respond with softness and suppleness.
STEP 6
TRAILER LOADING AND
UNLOADING:
The trailer loading block is as important for the foundation of horsemanship
as it is important for the foundation of the Statue of Liberty. This block
creates concern with many people. We have already strengthen this area from
our Ground Schools. At this time we add the missing block to the
foundation.
MULE SENSE
A mule can't pull while kicking,
This fact I merely mention
And he can't kick while pulling,
Which is my chief contention
Let's imitate the good old mule
And lead a life that's fitting;
Just pull an honest load, and then
There'll be no time for kicking
REMEMBER THE GOLDEN
RULE:
