Using Netscape for AOL email
Unofficial FAQ

Part of the Unofficial AOL Email FAQ.

I heard that Netscape can access AOL email, is this so?

Yes, Netscape held a unique position from 2000 through 2003 as one of the only third-party programs capable of accessing the proprietary AOL mail system.

The Netscape development staff was laid off or reassigned in mid-2003. AOL released its Netscape-based AOL Communicator in late-2003, which could also access the AOL mail system -- including proprietary functions like Status and Unsend. Then AOL opened up its mail system in April of 2004 with an IMAP and authenticated SMTP server.

Currently there is little development on the Netscape software. Future versions, if any, will likely just be a branded version of the current Mozilla release. Now that Netscape is no longer unique in being able to access the AOL mail system, this FAQ has been retired.

For more information about using third-party email clients with the AOL Mail System, see the Unofficial AOL Email FAQ.
