What does ADODI mean?
ADODI, the plural of ADO, is a Yoruba word that describes a man who "loves"
another man. More than just a description of partners, in Africa, the
ADODI of the tribe were
thought to embody both male and female ways of being and were revered as shamans, sages
and leaders.
purpose & mission
ADODI
New York is a community of men of color
who affirm their African lineage and love of men. Our purpose is to foster and
encourage the self discovery of all members of our diverse community.
ADODI is Black men, men who love other men, taking
advantage of Brotherhood, Fellowship and
developing the best in self-discovery.
We are Black men, unafraid to give themselves to each other, and who through the
act of sharing, are able to receive Black men who are seeking self-awareness through
sharing. ADODI
is men who are dedicated to health -- in mind, body and spirit. We are
Black men who through
embracing ourselves, develop the insight to make healthier choices in our lives.
ADODI implements this vision through various venues
including: Spring, Summer or Fall Retreats, one day retreats, seminars, regional Planning
Committee meetings (scheduled), post-retreat debriefings, projects conducted via mail,
phone, e-mail, etc.

ADODI Six principles
-
Principle
1 - Honesty, Openness and Clarity: this refers to our need to
assume responsibility for clearly articulating our ideas, suggestions,
insights and needs. This principle also speaks to the necessity of
being mindful of our body language.
-
Principle
2 - Sensitivity to Feelings: this refers to our need to assume
responsibility for active listening as a means to respect and validation of
feelings expressed and implied. It is our belief that the handling of
business is not antithetical to acknowledging feelings. This principle
also helps to protect the spiritual component of our meetings.
-
Principle
3 - The Five A's: Acknowledge, Appreciate, Affirm, Accept, Ache:
the Five A's constitute ideal dynamics used when responding to each
other. It furthers the development of preserving our spiritual
component. Note: Ache is the concept which reinforces the
other four A's, and is also the key dynamic by which the other four
functions.
-
Principle
4 - Resolution: this refers to a collective caretaking which
allows for space within the bounds of the meeting for individual members to
achieve closure on matters discussed. It is important to be realistic
about closure. The key is to honor the process and the time
constraints. When necessary, unresolved matters can be further
explored in post business meeting settings.
-
Principle
5 - Spiritually Guided: this refers to our commitment to seek
alignment with the Divine Energy at the beginning and closing of our
meetings. This also supports our commitment to integrate genuine love
with diverse communication styles and to preserve a clear sens of purpose.
-
Principle
6 - Carefronting: this refers to our ability to flag
discrepancies in our language and behavior. It is a process of
"pulling the carpet" from under our feet, when necessary, with the
clear intent to support, not hurt. This principle relies heavily on
honest, caring, thoughtfulness, and is designed to strengthen intimacy (as
opposed to creating distance).
