The One Car Family
Updated 9/18/03
We can all tell the rich folks from the poor folks by the number of cars they own or the number of bathrooms in their house.
The One Table Family (2/01)
When I was growing up we had a living room, a dining room, and a family room. We had sofa, chairs, piano, bookcases in the family room but no table there. we did everything on the dining room table. We spent so much time clearing the table. Just before dinner, clear off all the crossword puzzles, arts and crafts, games. Then after dinner clear the table again so we could do our school homework. It was a hassle doing any kind of project such as a model airplane. Why we didn't put another table in the family room I don't know.
Then just before high school my grandfather bought each of us kids a study desk for the bedroom.
Even if you live in a small apartment you can have more than one table.
The One Belt Wardrobe (2/01)
You usually alternate between two or three skirts or dresses or pairs of pants each week. So each day you have to unhook your belt from one skirt or pants and string it through another. Are you or your parents that stingy that each person can only have one belt?
The One Soap Bathroom (2/01)
You get in the shower and turn on the water. Then you reach for the soap. It's not there. Or maybe there is just a tiny sliver. So you have to get out, dripping water all over the floor, to grab the soap from above the sink.
Or you are about to shave or put on makeup. You look down and there is only a tiny sliver of soap. So you have to go over and reach behind the shower curtain, perhaps smearing some shaving cream onto it or dripping shaving cream on the toilet seat.
Worse yet, the soap is out on the kitchen sink. Grab a towel, wrap it around your middle, ...
Why is it that some families are so stingy that one cake of soap has to be used up before the next one is unwrapped?
"You hear the water turn on as someone starts taking a shower upstairs. What are the chances you will not hear the soap fall?"
Only One Backpack, Miss the Plane (9/03)
On an internet bulletin board about Walt Disney World , one family was telling of having the kids leave school before the normal dismissal so they could get to the airport on time. They would have to go home, empty their backpacks, and get packed for their trip.
I suggested that the family invest in a second backpack for each child. This way they could get everything ready the night before. A relative could bring the vacation backpacks to the school, pick up the kids, take the family to the airport, and bring the school backpacks home. Less time lost from the school day.
