Flosso, a character in real life, became one, once again, in Jason Lutes'
counterculture comic strip called Jar of Fools. Lutes, inspired by a photo
of Flosso appearing in Walter Gibson's Houdini Scrapbook incorporated the
magician into his saga. Jar of Fools tells the story of Ernie Weiss, an
unemployed magician, whose older brother died performing an escape trick. Weiss, who is
loosely modelled on Houdini's brother Hardeen, turns to his magic mentor, Al Flosso for
guidance. Though a comic strip, Jar of Fools runs dark and deep: Set in a
crumbling urban landscape, its characters are plagued by nightmares and hallucinations,
living on the fringes of poverty and crime. Flosso escapes from an old age home, but
cannot escape senility. Yet, Jar of Fools is captivating and life affirming, a
vivid, human story. After running as a popular comic strip in several newspapers, Jar
of Fools was released in two comic books (which are becoming increasingly scarce),
then as a single graphic novel. Persistant rumors suggest that Jar of Fools
is slated to become a major motion picture, which would mark Flosso's debut on the big
screen!
