Richard
Smith, 1799-1873;
Hannah Jack, 1807-1870
- by Alice Marie
Beard
Hannah Smith JACK is
named in manuscript written by Mary TODD LINCOLN's
half-sister. The manuscript named Hannah Smith Jack, her
husband, her children, and her location. Known as the
"Helms Papers," MSS 425, reels 12, 13 and 14,
it is available from The Kentucky Historical Society in
Frankfort, KY, on inter-library loan only. The manuscript
was by Emily Todd (Mrs. Helm), younger paternal
half-sister of Mary Todd (Mrs. Lincoln). However, the
portion of the manuscript dealing with Hannah was written
by Dr. Simeon Seymor Todd (1826-1899). The typed copy was
transcribed by Kentucky Historical Society librarian Nina
Visscher in 1939. The following is from the manuscript:
Hannah S. Jack was born Jan'y
3d 1807, in Warren Co., Ohio.
Married Richard Smith in Warren Co., Ohio, moved to
Tippecanoe Co., Ind., in 1828, thence to Carroll Co.,
same state near to Delphi where they died.
Children of Richard and Hannah S. (Jack) Smith:
Eliza Smith
Rachel Smith
Lewis Smith, killed at Shiloh where he was a federal
soldier, during the late civil war.
Mary Jane Smith
John Smith

NOTES:
HUSBAND: Richard H. SMITH
possibly of Princton, New Jersey.
WIFE: Hannah Smith JACK
The JACKs are a well-researched line. To go to
another site on the internet that shows Hannah Smith Jack
in a large data base of JACKs, click here: http://beckfamilies.com/scripts/igmget.cgi/n=Jack?I5003.
The genealogist whose work is at the other site is
Charlee Wilson. She is the modern-day authority on the
JACKs.
CHILD 3: Rachel SMITH
All records list her name as "Rachel"
except her death certificate which lists her name as
"Hannah." Her mother's name was Hannah;
possibly her name was "Hannah Rachel," but she
always went by "Rachel."
CHILD 4: Henry Lewis SMITH
Union soldier killed in battle. One source says
killed at Shiloh; one says Haines Bluff. The two were
distinctly different battles which means that at least
one source was incorrect.
CHILD 6: Mary Jane SMITH
According to gravestone, she was age 59 yr, 5
mo, 28 days, at death.
