Its the same old Santa, the same baby Jesus in the manger, everythings the same as it was last Christmas! I get Christmas cards from old friends. Of course my daughter and I bake the same family favorite Christmas cookies....and I love it. I wouldn't have it any other way. The good old American gusto of Christmas can be counted on every year. Imagine if someone clipped Santa's beard or said "We are not going to Grandma this Christmas!". Half the people in America would go into hysterics. We count on Christmas being the same every year. Its called "tradition".

In the olden days the Christmas celebration ran from Dec.25 until epiphany, Jan.6, the feast of the 3 kings, commemorating the day the Wise Men arrived in Bethlehem and found the Christ Child. Because that was the day the first gifts were offered, in the early days of Christmas, many families exchanged gifts then. Over the years, as Dec.25 became Santa's visiting day, the significance of Jan.6 was forgotten except by a few who continued to observe "Old Christmas."

                      The Christmas tree tradition

Long before the spread of Christianity, pagans clung to the belief that forests would turn green only if people paid homage to the evergreen throughout the winter. Evergreens, they were convinced, contained mystical powers that enabled the tree to stay green year-round. Unable to persuade the people of Northern Europe otherwise; Christian missionaries adopted the practice of bringing evergreens indoors for the winter.
