Vietnam 1967-68 - MAPS

Maps of the Chu Lai area

On this page will be found an overview map of South Vietnam and maps of the Chu Lai area with over 75 firebases identified. Firebase coordinates will be posted soon.
Dec 1967 Overview map of
Vietnam Dec 1967 Overview map of Vietnam - Locations of various Marine and Army units are shown on the map. Red box indicates the AO of Al's 1/14th Artillery Radar Section.
Large Area Map with over 75 IDs Large Area Map of Chu Lai (182k) - Over 75 LZs identified. List with coordinates coming soon. Yellow circles indicate the range of our radar from LZ Young, Cherry Hill and LZ Gator. We had the same range from the others as well. Al's assignment locations are bright red. Bright Red boxes indicate zoom-in locations of two following very detailed maps.
1:50,000 map of Chu Lai - top 1:50,000 map of Chu Lai (448k and 513k) - Updated 10/29/04 - The Map is 1968 vintage and we have added to it every unit and a few other things that we have been able to locate. This is an ongoing project so if you have corrections or additions, please let us know by Email. Please provide coordinates and the name and a short description of your addition.

The two halves of this map are configured so that you can download, print and join them into an 11x17 map. They are best printed by your own graphics program rather than your Internet browser which will probably cut off one side since I have made them larger than your screen size to achieve better printed resolution.

This is a MUST HAVE if you download and fly the Chu Lai scenery on the Flight Simulator page.

bottom
1:50,000 map of LZs Bowman, Clifford, Professional and Young 1:50,000 map of an area west of Chu Lai (369k) - Al's locations and a few others identified. The darker portion of the map is 1970 vintage; The lighter upper portion is 1984. You will note that a couple of locations along the joint between the maps have been flooded due to the construction of dams since 1970. This flooding would continue into the lower map if it had been made in 1984.
Firebase Grid Coordinates - The information on this list is taken from Les Hines's list located on the ADVA website and has been updated in a few places with more current information.

On this page will be found 1:50,000 tactical size maps like the ones we used of the Chu Lai area with over 60 firebases identified. The 6 sections of the Tien Phouc map are 1970 vintage; The other maps are 1983 and 1984.

You will note that a couple of locations along the joint between the Tien Phouc and the map above have been flooded due to the construction of dams since 1970. This flooding would continue into the lower map if it had been made in 1984.You will also note from markings on the maps that Cherry Hill and several other American and ARVN locations were destroyed when the NVA swept through the area after we left. Red circles indicate the maximum effective range of our radar from some of our locations. Most of the firebase locations came from the Americal Division Association website. Firebase coordinates will be posted soon.

If you are going to print the full sized maps, we recommend that you download them and print them using your favorite graphics program. Most Internet Browsers will not print the full image as they are larger than the screen.

Set your printer and program to the Landscape mode and print them with minimum margins and as big as they can be on the page. The maps overlap slightly so to join them into one large map you must cut the border off of one of the joining maps. the resultant map will be slightly smaller than the USGS original and the quality will not be quite as good, but you should be able to find anything on the copy that is on the original.
