OFFICIALS ASSIGNED FOR AFA ‘OLD TIMERS’ HALL OF FAME GAME The Southern States Football League Officials Association has
volunteered the services of an officials crew to work the AFA’s Hall of Fame
‘Old Timers’ game in Sarasota, Florida on Saturday, December 13th. The ‘Old Timers’ Game will feature a team made up of
rookie inductees from the ‘Class of 2003’ playing against a team of ageless
veteran AFA Hall of Fame alumni. The game will be played on the soft white
sand surface of Lido Beach, significantly reducing the injury factor for
these two teams of one-time semi-pro ‘greats’ - now “legends of their
football level”. “It’s our way of giving a little something back to the
national association”, said the SSFL supervisor of officials, John Walters.
Our officials group was responsible for providing an officiating crew for the
American Football Association’s 23rd annual National Championship
game last December in Sarasota and we felt honored when asked to supply the
game officials for the ‘Old Timers Game”, continued Walters. “We’re pleased that our officials volunteered their
services to the AFA for the ‘old timers’ game,” said SSFL commissioner Dave
Rice from his Marco Island (Florida) office. “It’s our chance to get more
involved with the national association”. The SSFL league is expected to have
a few representatives at the Hall of Fame Induction Dinner on Friday night
(Dec. 12) and also at the AFA Alumni business breakfast meeting on Saturday
morning. Team owners from that Florida based league are looking forward to
meeting other team and league reps from across the country that weekend.” Walters and other SSFL officials have been invited to
serve on the national AFA Rule Book committee who will be meeting in Sarasota
as part of the Hall of Fame weekend’s events. The AFA is in the process of
composing the first rulebook ever published exclusively for the semi-pro level
of the sport. Most leagues across the country rely on a combination of NFL,
NCAA and High School Federation playing rules. The AFA, in cooperation with
many of the 60 different leagues and various officials associations
coast-to-coast, hopes to define the semi-pro rule differences into one
complete rulebook - and have it published in time for the 2004 playing
season. Kickoff for the Hall of Fame ‘Old Timers Game’ is
scheduled for 3pm - on the Gulf of Mexico side of the Radisson Lido Beach
Resort Hotel in Sarasota, Florida. Admission is Free. Bring a beach blanket with you as all
the 50 yardline ‘grand-sand seats’ have been reserved in advance by the
families and friends of the AFA Hall of Fame Legends.
