MAYSL – Midland Area Youth Soccer League

We are a Spring and Fall Youth Soccer League based in Central Massachusetts providing competitive and recreational travel soccer for boys and girls teams from U10-U19 age groups.  Our membership is comprised of over 25 town organizations – see our Town Rep Contact list.  We are a member of the Mass Youth Soccer and represent 1 of 12 Youth Leagues throughout Massachusetts.  We are non-profit and registered as a 501 (c) organization also.

Our Spring season begins in early April and concludes in early June.  Teams in the competitive divisions compete for playoff opportunities with the Championship team earning the opportunity to compete in the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions (MTOC) held in late June.   Referees who perform well in MAYS are nominated for this event.  We also have a Fall Season that begins in early September and concludes the first week of November (no playoffs in the Fall season).

Referees are needed for all levels of play.  A single referee system is used U10, U12, and U14.  These games are scheduled on Saturdays with some weeknight games as necessary.  The rate of pay is $25, $30, and $35 respectively.  U16, U18, and U19 games use the three referee system.  These games are scheduled on Sunday afternoons.  The rate of pay is $45 (U16), $50 (U18 & U19) for the center referee and $25 (U16), $30 (U18 & U19) for each assistant referee.  Most referees are assigned in a set of two or three games.  Mindy McKenzie-Hebert is assigning for the fields in Shrewsbury, Grafton, Northbridge, Uxbridge, Mendon-Upton.  Andy Page and Curtis Brothers have all of the other towns in MAYSL.

Our U10, U12, and U14 teams compete in three distinct divisions – Division1 and 2 are competitive groups and Division 3 is recreational.  U10s play in a 6v6 format (including the goalie), U12 teams play in a 8v8 format and U14 play 11v11.  The game schedule guidelines are for U14s to start at 9am, U12s start at 12pm, and U10s start at 2pm.

U16s have two divisions – both in a competitive format.  U18 and U19 each have a single division – sometimes playing a combined schedule depending upon the number of teams entered from the town organizations.  The game schedule guidelines are to start at either 1pm, 3pm, or 5pm for U16s, U18s, and U19s depending upon field availability.  Some teams will play at neutral sites.

We use www.thearbiter.net for all referee game assignments, acceptances, postponements, and cancellations.  Email notification is the method used for 90% of the communication, although telephone calls are made to handle last minute notifications.  There is no cost to the referee for use of the system.  Referee payments are made upon submittal of the referee on-line game report and checks are mailed approximately every two weeks.

MAYS has sponsored entry level referee courses via the Massachusetts Referee Committee, www.massref.net .  Please refer to that website for current course information.
