The Family of Gideon and Nancy Kirksey

Family legend says that Gideon KIRKSEY was a red-headed Irishman from South Carolina. According to census records, he was born in 1801 in SC and married Nancy KIRKSEY in Butts County, GA, in 1830. Nancy was the daughter of Elisha and Patience (HARRIS) KIRKSEY. Both Nancy and Gideon died after the 1880 census was taken in Taylor County, GA. Gideon was a miller and moved between censuses - 1840 Tallapoosa County, AL; 1850 Henry County, GA; 1860 Crawford County, GA; 1870 and 1880 Taylor County, GA.

According to the 1850 Henry Co., GA census, the following persons are in the household of Gideon and Nancy Kirksey.  Please note that on this record the name is spelled CERKSEY.
Gideon 49, miller, born in SC  N.T. 38 F, NC / B.F. 19 M GA /J. M. 17 M GA / G.W. (George W. - he lived in Atlanta) 15 M GA / A.J.  (Andrew Jackson) 13 M GA /M.F. 10 F AL / N.C. (Nancy C.) 8 F. AL / L.M.  (Louisia Margaret) 5 F. AL / J. M. 3 M GA / W.J. (William J.) 1 M.   [Anyone related to these Kirksey's out there?)

According to the 1860 Crawford Co., GA census Thomas N. was 8 and born in GA. N.C. is Nancy C. who was married to Edward TURNER and L.M. is Louisa Margaret who married William Pare (Parr).

A.J. Kirksey was living in Brooks Co., GA in 1860. He was listed with Melissa age 25, Elizabeth 6, Franklin 4, Nancy 3 mos. Melissa died in south GA after this date and A.J. returned to Taylor Co. where he remarried Sarah Elizabeth Dickson Griffith. According to the 1870 census, he is listed with Sarah, Franklin 12, Nancy 10, Samantha Griffith 7, Leola Griffith 5, and Mary 1. According to family tradition, he was a stagecoach driver in south Georgia.

In 1827 in Butts Co., William KIRKSEY married Martha WHITE. William was born in 1794? in SC. Were Gideon and William brothers? I believe they were but I need proof.

A review of the 1800 census records of South Carolina, in an effort to determine Gideon's father, reveals the following KIRKSEYS were enumerated in the census:

* Christopher in Pendleton 45 +
* Christopher in Pendleton 1 male 10-16, 3 between 16-26, 1 between 26-45, 1 over 45; 1 female between 10-16, 1 female over 45
* Edward in Edgefield 3 males under 10, 1 male between 26-45; 1 female under 10, 1 female between 26-45
* William in Pendleton 3 males under 10, 1 male between 26-45; 1 female under 10, 1 female between 26-45

Christopher Sr. left a will dated 1814 that was probated in 1818 in the District of Pendleton, SC. His line is well documented. His wife is Perthany and the names of his children are William, Jehu, Christopher, Elisha, Isaiah, Mark, Lucy PAU?/PACE, Nancy DAVIS, and Sarah FOSTER. (Recorded in WB A, page 230, Anderson Co. SC Vol. 1, Bk. A. pp 235-236 will of Christopher).

William is well documented also and the names of his children are: Robert Kirksey, Penelope HOLLAND, Nancy GARVIN, Christopher, Jared Kirksey, William Kirksey, Jr. Catharine HALLUM, Fair, Elhanon Winchester, and Silas. (Recorded in WB 1, p 174-175, Pickens Co. SC Vol. 1, pp 210-211 will of Silas)

Christopher - is this the Christopher Jno. who died in Edgefield Co., SC, in 1801? Is he William's son? Is he Christopher Sr.'s son? Who is the father of Christopher Jno? I recently found out that there is a Christopher buried in Pickens Co. This man died in 1844.  Is this the son of Christopher Sr.?

Edward was married to Winefred YOUNGBLOOD. The names of his children are not known with the exception of a daughter named Mary who married a TALBOT. What happened to Edward? Where did he die? Was he moving to Pike Co., AL, with the Youngbloods?

CHATHAM COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

In his 1778 will, Isaac KIRKSEY names his wife, Mary, and children John, Edward, and Sarah. The executors were Christopher and Gideon and witnesses were Moses Smith, Junr., Absalum Smith, and William Tottey, Junr.

Gideon's will, dated 1801, names his wife, Mary, and children Abraham, William, Gideon, Isaac, Sarah Oen, Mary Mosely, Martha Henry? Witnesses were Williams Edwards and John Ray.

Gideon Kirksey II (son of Gideon and Mary above) died 30 June 1816 in Maury (was Hickman) Co., TN (Inv. Records Wills and Settlements of Estates Bk. B, p. 181). He was married to Mary Carmichael (daughter of Alex Carmichael). Their children were William Henry married Jellico Connolly (lived in Madison Co., AL), John C., Jesse B. married Kathy Conley, Isaac James married Mary B. Conley, Gideon III (wish I knew more about this man), Abraham, Young married Gracy Green, and Alexander

The following is an abstract of a Power of Attorney dated 1800.
Gideon Kirksey legatee of Rebecca Rickmond alias Kirksey, Edward, John, Sarah and Isaac Kirksey heirs of Isaac Kirksey (dec'd) and his wife Mary, and John Griffin, Poel Breazeal and his wife Rebeccah, Michael Blocker and his wife Rossey, Kennon Breazeal and Hasky his wife, heirs of William Griffin and his wife Sarah (dec'd) appointed their trusty friend Christopher Kirksey attorney to collect and receive their claims against the estate of Rebeccah Rickman alias Kirksey (dec'd). Witnessed by William Kirksey, Doevry (sp?) Hearn, and Benjamin Clement.

Christopher, Gideon, Isaac, Sarah, and Rebeccah were listed as children and/or grandchildren of Thomas Rickman (will). Therefore, Christopher, Gideon and Isaac would have the same father. The consensus is that Edward is the father. Most people believe that Edward was married to Rebeccah Rickman.

There was another Kirksey family who had property in Iredell Co., NC. Elijah had sons George Washington, Elisha, William, and Christopher, and possibly a Matthew. I have a deed of sale for Matthew to George of property that he inherited. This information needs additional substantiation.

HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA

The will of Thomas Rickman of the Parish of Antrim in Halifax Co. names sons and daughters Gideon, Christopher, Isaac, Sarah and Rebecah (no last name given). He then goes on to name his children John Rickman, Robert Rickman, grandson Robert Rickman, and daughter Mary Hudson. The will is dated 1761.
