Various Quilts by Pat

Here is a photo of a wallhanging of a Tessellating Christmas tree, designed by me and made from some Debbie Mumm fabrics
that I got in a packet of fat quarters from KeepSake Quilting,
a few Christmases ago.

Hurricane Andrew ravaged Homestead, Florida on August 24, 1992. We live about 40 miles north of Homestead, which was out of Andrew's destructive path. We experienced some very heavy wind from the "feeder bands" of Andrew. A beautiful olive tree in our front yard, was blown over by the winds. We were lucky -- that was the only thing we lost.

I, like many other quilters, had to make a quilt to commemorate a "happening". This Christmas Tree skirt was made from Cheryl Phillips book, "Quilts Without Corners". The 7 quilts in Cheryl's book are all made using the wedge ruler. The machine quilting was done in a "swirly" line in silver metallic thread, to duplicate Andrew's wrath. It slices through blocks, just the way Andrew sliced through blocks in people's neighborhoods in Homestead. In 1997, Homestead has rebuilt.

This wallhanging is an original design. The story of how this piece evolved is documented in February 1997 issue of "The Floppy Gazette", a publication from the folks at the Electric Quilt Company, who wrote the quilt designing program EQ3.

I bought some hand dyed fabric -- 4 gradiations of peach and 4 gradiations of teal -- at the Sewing Expo in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They sat on my cupboard shelf for a while, didn't know what I was going to do with those fabrics. Then, I decided to see what I could design in EQ3. I had such fun designing, but the end result is not even close to the designs I began with! What looks like simple squares in the center, really is not. I tore (not cut) the strips of fabric and wove them. There isn't any sewing done to those squares in the center. I like the look of the ravelly, torn edges.

Go to my page of designs that I submitted to clubEQ challenges to download the project file for this wall quilt. Scroll to April 2001 - Colors.
I re-made the quilt in EQ4, using the programs ability to choose
different shades, grades and tints of colors.

House Block 1 -- Judy, Nebraska
House Block 2 -- me, Florida
House Block 3 -- Pat, ?
House Block 4 -- Meena, Michigan
House Block 5 -- Heidi, New York
House Block 6 -- Betty, New Mexico (who also made Tree Block 6 - a yucca)
House Block 7 -- Karla, Utah
This wall hanging was designed by me. It consists of 7 house blocks and 6 tree blocks. I received six of the house blocks and one of the tree blocks from "my first ever Block Swap". I joined the Swap through QuiltList. I am sorry that the 3rd and 6th house blocks aren't showing up too nicely. They are very light colored fabrics and didn't photograph too well.

I want to thank Wendy for hosting the swap.

And a thank you to those listed to the left, whose blocks "made" my wall hanging!

Join a Block Swap!
They are fun and you get some very neat squishies in the mail!

I just had to make this Paper Pieced Flamingo when I saw it! It was my first venture into a Paper Piecing Pattern that had many segments to it. The Flamingo's body is made of hot pink satin, the legs are gold lame and I even tacked on a bead for it's eye! The background is a turquoise mottled cotton. The borders (there are 3) and binding are from a Nancy Crow border fabric that was just waiting in my stash to be put on this wall hanging! Quilting lines were machine quilted with gold tinsel thread.

The Paper Piecing Pattern was designed by Brenda Groelz. She has lots of birds and other things to Paper Piece.
