ARLENE MAGID
MOVES TO ENGLAND

...and here's why!

Arlene and David Williams
on their wedding day

David is the head of the English department at Bothal Middle School in our town and for 12 years has sat as a Labour member of the Wansbeck District Council. He is my soulmate forever--those of you who know me know how I’ve always been drawn to England, and when I met David I understood my pull towards my new country! Our happy home now includes six cats and two bunnies.

I will continue to accept work on a limited basis from clients worldwide (see new terms of business near bottom of page for a currency converter from rates in US dollars). After the move from hell (If you are considering an international move, feel free to ask me who to avoid!), my office is re-established at my new home in England and I am finally working on horse material again.

Do you really know your horse's pedigree?

Pedigree Research & Consulting Service
Let me help you breed and select horses with confidence and promote your sale horses and stallions at stud. Services include seminars, breeding consultations, appraisals, farm brochures, promotional writing, champion lists, auction statistics and all types of pedigree work!

I've been doing paid work for people needing to know more about their Arabian horses since 1982. I have a good working knowledge of all bloodlines and of conformation--my feeling is that there are great horses of all bloodlines in the world! My articles have appeared in the U.S. in Arabian Horse Times (of which I was editor at one time), Arabian Horse World, International (I.A.H.A.'s magazine), Crabbet Influence, Arabian Visions, Arabian Horse Express, Arabians, California and Southwest Arabians, Arabian News, Pacific Northwest Arabian News, and Horseman's Yankee Pedlar. I was the researcher and editor for the book "Arabian Legends" published by Western Horsemen(which is probably the best reference in print for historic Arabians at this time). I have also written the introductory sections of the last four Pyramid Society Handbooks on Egyptian Arabians. In the 1980s I did the pedigree research and commentary for many of the Scottsdale auctions and was the researcher behind Lasma's Star Stallion program.

In Australia my work has been published in Australian Arabian News, Australian Arabian Express and Studs and Stallions. In England I've just had my first article published in Arab Horse Society News and have another due out in the Arab Horse Society Newsletter.

I've given seminars and courses at schools, horse farms all over the U.S., the Scottsdale All- Arabian Show (where I was a guest speaker two years in a row), conference centers and other venues. I specialize in the history of the Arabian horse, bloodlines, family strains, achievements (show ring, endurance, racing) and related information. If you want the percentages of blood done on your horse I recommend Eva Dano (who has a computer program just for this purpose)- insert link to Eva's site. I've done legal work for horse owners(including tax cases), a major pharmaceutical company, and the state government of Washington State among others in the last two years. Due to the nature of legal work, until a case is finished I cannot discuss my role in it, but can furnish references should you wish to hire me as an expert witness.

SEMINARS
Seminars are prepared to suit the needs of clubs, schools and farms. A minimum of $100.00 for a half-day seminar, full day seminars run $350.00 - $500.00, plus expenses (Transportation and meals). I am happy to stay in the homes of seminar organizers to save hotel costs when required. All topics relating to the history of the Arabian horse and its conformation can be covered.

BREEDING CONSULTATIONS
Assistance in choosing the proper mate for your mare, or in attracting the best mares to insure your stallion's success. Variable prices based on whether I am to help choose between several existing alternatives or to begin a search and carry it through to completion. Typical cost is $100.00 for a mare with two possible mates, or $125.00 to initiate a search for the proper stallion for her. To select mares for a stallion, initial cost is $100.00. Breeding consultations require submission of video footage and/or still photographs and pedigrees of all horses being considered. I have helped breed a number of champions already - let me help you get the best possible foals.

APPRAISALS
Appraisals are available on a limited basis, and consist of a written page describing faults and virtues of the horse, some information on winners in its pedigree, and a comparison with current auction prices of horses of similar quality. I can inspect a horse personally or I can do appraisals from video footage supported with still photographs. Appraisals cost $100.00, and are invaluable as both prepurchase evaluations and documentation of value prior to sales. Appraisals are also useful in obtaining insurance and in legal matters (I.R.S. audits especially).

FARM BROCHURES
Complete farm brochures include a magazine-type article about your farm and horses. Call for free consultation on your needs. Farm brochures are billed at $15.00 per hour and typical cost is $150.00 and up.

SHOW RECORD VALIDITY CHECK - As we are all finding out, IAHA’s CD and Online show records are often INCORRECT! Horses are missing wins they earned, or being credited for classes they were never in (stallions in gelding classes, colts winning filly classes, etc.) For a small fee (starting at $15.00 and up, depending on how extensive the show record is for each horse) - I will double check and correct the show records for your horse that are in the IAHA database or on the 2001 & 2000 AHR CD-ROM. This fee will include my sending a copy of the errors and corrections to IAHA for their information so that future information will be correct.

A 6 generation champion pedigree (with comments on ancestors for 4 generations) is $25.00; an 8 generation champion pedigree is $100.00 (with comments on ancestors for 6 generations). Tracing a horse to its desertbred ancestors is available on a limited basis and is billed at $15.00 per hour (typical cost: $150.00). PROMOTIONAL WRITING
Promotional pieces on individual horses are one of the best ways to sell or attract breedings for stallions. A one page promotional writeup (single-spaced, double-spaced between paragraphs) is $50.00. Pedigree research essays include show, race and background information are in the format of a magazine article about the horse's background. Minimum for an essay is $100.00. Essays typically run 3 - 5 pages. They are useful for learning complete information about a horse, but are less effective as promotional tools due to their length.

SPECIAL PROJECTS
Just about anything involving research on Arabian horses can be attempted for you as a Special Project. This might include auction price statistics, verification that a horse is the only one with a particular achievement (example: the 1997 U.S. Top Ten Stallion KK War Knight was the only black stallion in breed history to achieve a U.S. Stallion Halter Top Ten), etc. Rate for special projects is $15.00 per hour, please contact me to discuss your ideas in advance.

SPECIAL NOTES! PLEASE READ!:
Pedigree research is highly individualized and some projects may take longer than others. Please make sure to state your deadlines when initially ordering so that I can properly schedule my workload to meet your needs. Work is NOT scheduled till payment is received. Rush orders with a week or less lead time are charged at double the rates stated above and client must pay all fax or air freight charges. Excessive phone costs and time (which may or may not include time spent in e-mail) will be charged to the client. Please show consideration for my time--I love to chat about horses but if you call or email with questions on information other than what you've ordered it takes time away from the completion of actual work. Also, I welcome inquiries about my services by telephone or email but please do not expect me to answer questions for which I usually charge unless you are willing to pay for a phone consult. Such questions would include show record verifications, questions about which stallion is best for your mare, etc. This asking of "paid information" questions in initial queries about my work (from people who do not purchase written work later) has caused a number of misunderstandings in the past and I would like to eliminate the chance of any future ones!

SCHEDULING
Because I have a very full life (living happily ever after is a full time job in itself and I have other work responsibilities outside my home), it is important that after I agree to do your project, payment is received in a reasonable amount of time so that my schedule does not become overbooked. In the past scheduling has often been a problem and some people were disappointed at the length of time it took me to complete work that I’d been told was a "no hurry" project. Therefore I am going to strictly adhere to my 14 day rule within the UK and 30 days for non-UK clients: after I accept your project, either in email or on the phone, payment must be received within 14 days for UK clients and 30 days for non-UK clients if your work is to retain its place on my schedule. If payment is received significantly later than these dates (I do allow for mail problems!) I will have to return it as I will not be able to do your project. No more late payments from clients who tell me to "do the work when you have time" -- historically those have been the ones who complained about MY lateness in completing work. Please keep in mind that except for Noir the office bunny,  I am a one woman operation, with no paid secretarial help (though Noir does get to shred paper!)

There are several easy payment options available for non-UK clients, please email me for details and use the currency converter below to find out what your project will cost in your currency. Payment must be made in either US dollars or British pounds, however. See link to currency converter below.  For UK clients, cheques or postal orders only, no credit cards.
