The RAMBO FAMILY TREE by Beverly Nelson Rambo 26 May 2006. 2nd edition, final pre-publication draft by Ron Beatty http://members.aol.com/RamboBook RAMBO24.TXT is the name of this file. It covers only one generation of Rambos. This is not a web page. It is ASCII, one of 50 Rambo text files. If you view this file in a web browser (like Internet Explorer), the text runs off the right edge of the screen (and you cannot specify "word wrap"). You will need to save this file to disk and use any word processor to view it. If you find one ancestor, but have trouble finding earlier ancestors, read the "Introduction" web page. The file APPENDIX.TXT explains the numbering system. Notice that each earlier generation has one less digit in the number. If a family had more than nine children, the tenth child is numbered "A," the eleventh "B," and so on. The web site contains much more information about Rambos, genealogy, and the forthcoming book. Check the "Introduction" page there first and proceed as appropriate. Generally you will find no mention of living persons on the web or in the book. If you do want to see your name in print or on the web, you must send me an explicit request. All Rambo descendants, regardless of surname, are encouraged to send their ancestry for inclusion in the third edition of the book. Contact rsbeatty@gmail.com, but be patient as my e-mail is neglected for months at a time. If you knew the amount of work involved in this effort and the number of correspondants you'd understand. (My personality defects exacerbate the problem.) The file ENDNOTES.TXT contains the list of references. Within the paragraphs about your ancestor, you may see numbers enclosed in parenthesis, such as this: (589) or this: (589),, p. 32) These numbers correlate to a reference number in the file ENDNOTES.TXT. See the web page "Introduction" for an explanation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The children of [#17121] John and Eleanor (Robinson) Rambo [son of Ezekiel, Mathias, Gabriel, Gunnar, Peter] were Jane, Eliza, Margaretta, Nathan, Hugh, William, David, and John W. SALLIE MARTIN The children of [#22611] James and Judith (Lee) Bankson [son of Andrew, Lawrence, Andrew, Gertrude (Rambo) Bankston, Peter] 226111. ANDREW BANKSON was born 14 Apr 1787 in Tennessee as his parents made their trek from Georgia to St. Clair Co., Illinois where they lived by 1804.(601),(753),, Marriages Book A, p. 4) He married ELIZABETH MOORE on 1 May 1808 in a ceremony performed by his father, James Bankson, Esq., a justice of the peace of St. Clair Co.(579),(612),, p. 214) Andrew and his wife made their home in neighboring Washington County where he became involved in affairs of this frontier settlement. Andrew Bankson actively defended his home and his country by serving in the War of 1812 and the Blackhawk Indian War. Andrew Bankson became the Territorial Treasurer in 1813, and the receipts and disbursement ledger are filed in a special vault in Springfield, IL. As the representative of Washington County, Illinois, Andrew signed the Constitution of the State of Illinois when it became a state on 26 Aug 1819.(611) In 1822, he was elected to the State Senate for a term of four years, and in 1823, he voted against the resolution which would have made Illinois a slave state. The Bankson family moved to Dubuque County, Iowa Territory by 1836 where Andrew also served as a representative from the county. At that time, they had two sons and three daughters under age 21. He died 22 Jun 1853 while visiting his daughter and son-in-law in Wisconsin. Andrew and Elizabeth Bankson had these children:(594) 2261111. TEMPERANCE BANKSON 2261112. JAMES BANKSON, b. ca 1810 2261113. WILLIAM M. BANKSON 2261114. ORINDA BANKSON 2261115. JOHN BANKSON 2261116. SUSANNAH BANKSON 2261117. SALLY BANKSON 2261118. PEYTON BANKSON, b. ca 1824 2261119. ELIZABETH BANKSON 226111A. MIRANDA BANKSON, b. ca 1830 On 12 Dec 1804, Andrew, James, and Silas Bankson with 55 others, signed a petition for relief from the cost of $2 per acre for poor land they had to settle on in order to live close together for protection from Indian troubles. ( Research needed: Might this Silas be the Elijah who appears in the 1818 state census in Washington Co., IL? Andrew and James are in Clinton Co. in the 1830 census.) In 1805, they with about 200 other petitioners asked for a time extension as they had no cash to pay for the land offered for sale sooner than they expected. Andrew and his father signed a petition on 6 Apr 1808 that requested formation of a western government on the shores of the Mississippi, separate from that at Vincennes, Indiana. Indian raids, often agitated by the British agents, erupted into outright war against Illinois settlers by 1811. All able bodied males went into service, and the records show that Andrew Bankson served in Capt Nathaniel Jurney's Co. from 31 Jul 1812 to 15 Nov 1812.(619),, vol. 9: p. 8) He was a 2nd Lt. in Capt Jacob Short's Company of Mounted Rangers from Aug 3 1813 until 28 Feb 1815, according to Company Muster Rolls.(594) During the Black Hawk War, he was a Captain of a Company, 3rd Regiment, 3rd Brigade of Mounted Volunteers, and served between 7 Jun and 16 Aug 1832.(613) This was the Spy Brigade under the command of Col. Sam Houston (1792-1851), known as the Col. Sam Houston of Illinois, and not the one of Texas fame.(621) In his application for bounty land in 1850, his comrades in arms described him as "no person in the west who had performed more service in the cause of our country than Andrew Bankson".(594) 226112. ELIZABETH BANKSON was married to Mr. COX.(594) Some researchers believed that she married ISAAC D. TAULBEE.(622) However, this is quite unlikely. Elizabeth was the second child of James and Judith Bankson, whose first child Andrew was born 14 Apr 1787. If Elizabeth had been born as early as 1788, she would have been only 15 years old when Isaac married about 1803, and had a son in 1804. (His sixth child, born in 1826, was named Elijah Bankston Taulbee.) 226113. NANCY BANKSON was born 14 Nov 1790 in Georgia, and on 14 Jun 1807,(753),, marriage records) she married JONATHAN HILL in a ceremony performed by her father, a justice of the peace of St. Clair Co., Illinois.(612),, p. 220),(623) Jonathan Hill was born 2 Apr 1787(0),, Violet Armstrong, Shelbyville, IL) in Georgia, but moved to Illinois with his family. In Dec 1807, Jonathan and his bride filed for 320 acres of land on Silver Creek, St. Clair Co., IL. During the War of 1812, Jonathan Hill served in Capt. Amos Squire's Company from 9 Sep to 14 Nov 1812.(619),, vol. 9: p. 9) By 1818, the Hills lived on Shoal Creek in Washington County, IL.(594) They finally settled in Fayette Co., IL by 1821. Three of their sons died in 1821 and were buried in the Welch Cemetery, Fayette Co.(612) They received a land grant of 80 acres in Shelby Co. in 1827, and sold it on 30 Oct 1832. There is no record of the family for 17 years, until the death of Jonathan on 11 Jun 1849 in Shelby County, Illinois ( Conflicting information: or 11 Jun 1847 or 6 May 1841 at Twelve Mile Prairie, aged 55(0),, Violet Armstrong, Shelbyville, IL)). They had these children:(594),(658) 2261131. JOHN HILL, b. 1808, d. 15 Mar 1856, m. Tabetha Smith 2261132. JAMES HILL, b. 1809, d. 5 Mar 1864, m. Polly Thomason 2261133. MARY (Polly) BANKSON married MOSES STORY who was born about 1796 in West Canada. He was the first teacher in Shelby Co., IL. Polly Story died before the Census of 1850 when Moses Story was listed as a school teacher. He and his younger children apparently lived with his married daughter Lucy Reed and family in Moultrie County, IL. Moses and Polly (Bankson) Story had these children: 2261151. LUCY STORY, b. ca 1825 2261152. EPHRAIM D. STORY, b. ca 1829 2261153. MARY ANN STORY, b. ca 1830 2261154. PEYTON R. STORY, b. ca 1832 2261155. DESDEMONA STORY, b. ca 1839 226116. PEYTON RANDALL BANKSON was born 29 Apr 1797 in Georgia, and served in the same Company during the War of 1812 as did his father, James Bankson. Peyton was a private in Capt. Amos Squire's Co. of Drafted Militia of the Illinois Territory from 9 Sep to 14 Nov 1812.(619),, vol. 9: p. 9) By Apr 1821, Peyton Bankson's name appeared on poll lists of voters in elections held at Vandalia in Fayette Co., IL.(615) Peyton R. Bankson married ELLEN THOMASON in April 1821 in the Beck Settlement, Fayette Co., Illinois. She was born 22 Sep 1799 in North Carolina.(594) On 30 Mar 1824 in Fayette Co. Peyton R. Bankson bought land from his parents, James and Judith Bankson.(614) In 1827, Peyton and his wife "Ellenor" executed a deed for 80 acres to John Hall. By 1830, they were enumerated in Fayette Co. census with two males and one female between ages 5 and 10, and three males and one female under age 5. He was a county commissioner of Fayette Co. in 1827, and a justice of the peace in 1838 when he performed marriages of Folly Harris (possibly a niece) and Campbell C. Nave. During the Black Hawk War, Peyton was a 1st Sgt. of Capt. Sam Houston's Spy Brigade, 3rd Brigade of Mounted Volunteers.(613) He enrolled on 7 Jun 1832 and was mustered out 16 Aug 1832. Peyton died between 1838 and 1840. On the 1840 Census, Ellen was listed as "Allen Bankston" in Shelby Co., IL. "Allen Bankston" was listed as owing 43 cents on the delinquent land list of Shelby Co., IL for 1841, and as "deceased" on the list for 1842.(627) However, the entry must have referred to Peyton who was "deceased" as of 16 Nov 1838, and not Ellen. She lived in Moultrie Co. with her children in 1850, and died 24 Jan 1852. The Banksons had these children as listed in an old family Bible that is now owned by Paul Bankson, Decatur: 2261161. JAMES BANKSON was born 8 Jan 1795 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, and went to Illinois with his parents about 1804. He was the only son of pious parents and embraced religion at age fourteen. Although he had few educational opportunities, he studied and acquired a working knowledge of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. He became a Methodist minister, and began preaching in the Missouri Conference in 1821, and was transferred to the Apple Creek Circuit of the Illinois Conference in 1829.
