Monk Seal (Monachus Schauinslandi) endangered specie
The Hawaiian monk seal, Monachus schauinslandi, is Hawaii's only
native marine mammal. With an
estimated population of only 1,200, it is also the most endangered marina
mamal in America today.
The Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 and the Endangered species
Act of 1973 were the first
federal laws designed to protect America's endangered species like the
Hawaiian monk seal estimated
to be declining in population at a rate of 4% per year.
In a last-minute Executive Order in December 2000, Presiden Clinton created
the largest reserve in
the United States, thus protecting over 70% of the United States' coral
reefs while ensuring habitat for
the Hawaiian monk seal. Covering 84 million acres of remote islands, atolls,
reefs, and underwater
habitat, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve
now privides renewed hope
for the future of the Hawaiian monk seal.
Harbor Seal (Phoca Vitulina Concolor)
Harbor Seals are found across the Northers Hemisphere in both the
Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In
the northeast Pacific, they range from Alaska to Baja California, in Mexico.
They favor near-shore
coastal waters and frequent sandy beaches, mudflats, bays and estuaries.
