A Carcinoid Cancer Resource for the Layperson
ATTENTION - Northern Virginia, DC and Eastern USA Carcinoid Cancer Patients. We would love to have you attend the next meeting of the CAPITAL AREA CARCINOID SURVIVORS, which is held on one Saturday each month at the Life With Cancer Family Center which is located near Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax County, VA. My purpose in creating
these
Carcinoid Cancer pages is twofold.
The first is
to keep the many members of my family and friends up-to-date on MY battle with this disease.
The second is to provide a resource for the non-medical person who has the disease, suspects that
he may have the disease or knows someone who has the disease. It is my hope that someone who
does not know he has the disease may recognize early symptoms and insist that his or her Doctor
run a simple test or two to diagnose the disease. IF IT IS CAUGHT EARLY ENOUGH IT CAN
BE COMPLETELY CURED.
One of the biggest challenges with this rare disease is to find a Doctor who recognizes and knows
something about it. They all studied it briefly in medical school but, because it is so rare, most
have never seen or treated the disease. It is completely understandable that they might not
recognize it.
Guys and Gals - If you have facial flushing (similar to Hot flush in a menopausal woman), DO
NOT let your Doctor tell you that it is male menopause or some other off-the-wall ailment.
Another frequent symptom is persistent, and often mild, diarrhea or something like it. Insist that
they run a urine 5-HIAA test! This is a simple test where you collect your urine for 24 hours and
then send it to a lab to be tested for Serotonin. If you have Carcinoid Cancer the level of this
chemical is almost always way above normal. Mine was over 90; it should have been less than
10!!!
I am an Engineer who has Carcinoid Cancer. I am NOT a medical professional; so please visit
the medical sites that I have included and visit your Doctor. The information on this site has
been gathered from my doctors, The Carcinoid Cancer
Foundation's Website. and various other websites. It reflects my understanding of my
disease as a layperson. I will attempt to use plain English and as few medical words as
possible. |
The contents of my Carcinoid Cancer pages are as follows. You can access them by clicking the
buttons or text links (blue underlined text that make your cursor turn into a finger) that you will
find throughout this site. The buttons at the top of the page will be on every page in this section.
If you click a link that takes you to another site and you wish to return to my site, then use your

A brief description of the disease, it's symptoms,
diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. PLEASE do not rely solely on the information that I have
presented. It represents my understanding as a layperson and is slanted towards my particular
case.
A good place to start looking at medical professional information about this disease is
The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation's
Website. |
 |
In this section will be found more detailed information, including photos, of tests and procedures
that I have experienced and have an interest in. Interest in may be that it is something that I see
in the future for me. It also may be things which I hope that I never have to experience. |
 |
In this section you will find a description of the symptoms, diagnosis and continued progress
with the disease in my personal situation. I will update this page periodically with events,
concerns and maybe also just how I am feeling today. |
 |
Here I will list and discuss things which I and/or the medical community still have unanswered
questions about. I may also list things which have been answered or just seem to be
interesting. |
 |
Finally, and this is a very important section, I will include LINKS to some of the Carcinoid
Cancer resources that I have found. I strongly urge you to use this section. |
