Back on Cherry Hill from LZ Clifford - June 15, 1968 - The first order of business after
returning and setting up the radar was showers. I must have washed and scraped several pounds
of dirt and
whiskers off of just me. Next time would most certainly be different. Since we had to be
airlifted
with several trailers of equipment we had the ability to squeeze in comfort items and vowed to do
so next time. After getting myself clean I went to work on the radar. It took several days to
restore it's former accuracy because of the pounding it had taken not only in transit but also
because of it's proximity to one of the howitzers on LZ Clifford. Next time it would be placed a
bit farther from artillery.
The later part of the month of June was pretty quiet as far as enemy activity. Apparently the
beating that we gave to the NVA regiment while on LZ Clifford slowed them down a bit. We
went back to a 12 hour per day operation and managed to get some relax time. SSG Donald J.
Parks joined us during that time as section chief. Under his direction we built a Lanai and
barbecue pit in front of the bunker under which we enjoyed some relief from the hot sun while
cooking steaks acquired from the mess hall. You can just see the edge of the Lanai in the upper
left picture in front of the bunker. We very much liked Sgt Parks. He was a combat
veteran, having served as a recon platoon Sgt during prior assignments. His combat knowledge
and skills were welcome as we were basically technical types and not well trained in fighting
techniques. And although we were in a "safe" area at Chu Lai we expected to move back to the
field very soon. We found that Sgt. Parks also liked to have fun and played as hard as he
fought.
On July 3 we received word that we were to move to LZ Bowman the next day. As before we
were told that we would only be there a couple of days. Yeah....right..... This time we went
prepared to be there awhile. As luck would have it we were, in fact, there only a couple of days.
It is a good thing too, because the Radar was damaged while landing there and although
functional was not accurate while there. |

No. I am not still in the army; I was
discharged in November of 1969 after completing my 3 year enlistment. I don't have a set of
Jungle Fatigues so these Stateside Fatigues from 1969 will have to do here. The shirt fits; the
pants....Oh well.... Click here to contact me by
