The Diana fritillary on Asclepias tuberosa (left and immediately below) and A. syriaca (below left).
S. diana is threatened throughout its range (KY, VA, TN and surrounding areas) due to loss of its favored habitat
(wooded bottomlands) for use as farmland.

| Larval host plants include common blue violets
(Viola papilionacea) and marsh blue violets (V. cucullata). Adults sip nectar, and they
frequent milkweeds. They will also feed on juices of dung.
