Drag Racing A '68 Beetle
John Edmondson Driving His '68 Drag Beetle In Lakeland, Florida
A Little History...
Coming from a background in Drag Racing I knew it was something I had to do.  In 1981, my father, Phillip Edmondson, set an NHRA 1/8 mile record of 7.00 seconds with a 1.9 liter powered Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.  This record was held undefeated until his class was eliminated in 1984.

In 1997, my dad and I agreed it was time for the Edmondsons to get back into the sport of Drag Racing.  We knew that if we were going to do this, we were going to do it right and do it competitively.

We started with a Pro-Stock mild steel tube chassis, which is NHRA Certified.  We went with this chassis for two reasons:  Its superior handling and its safety.  Next, a 1968 model Volkswagen body was chosen.  The car has all plexiglass windows and a fiberglass front end for weight reduction.  The total weight of the car and driver is approximately 1450 pounds.

For the powerplant, an after market Autocraft case was chosen and total engine displacement was 2.5 liters.

At numerous races, highlites have been low ETs, consistent reaction times, and in the last half of the 1999 season we were named the fastest Pro-Stock Volkswagen on the East Coast; with our best 1/8 mile ET time being 6.40 seconds at 111.2 mph.

This car has been featured at the Chattanooga, Tennessee track during national events that were held there.

Future plans are to update my NHRA Certification to drive and campaign a Top Fuel Funny Car.
