Previous Update 24 JULY 1999
Henry Jackson Click was born about 1783 in Virginia, probably
in the area of the Shenandoah Valley.
He was the son of LUDWIG HENRICH GLUCK A/K/A
LEWIS HENRY CLICK Born
23 Mar 1740/41 Dannstadt, Ludwighafen, Germany. The name of his mother is
unknown. Lewis Click was in Lancaster Co, Pennsylvania, among the "Pennsylvania
Dutch". Lewis arrived in the United States in 1749 on the ship "Lydia" with
his parents in Philadelphia, PA.
At the age of about 4 years, Henry & his family migrated Southward
where in 1787 his father, Lewis Henry Click, purchased 200 acres of land
laying on a small branch of Little Limestone Creek, in what was Washington
County, North Carolina for which he was taxed in 1789 & 1790 in the District
of Capt. Riffe's Company Militia taken by John Strain. He was taxed,
along with the land, for 8 Black poles. Washington Co. North Carolina would
later become Washington Co. Tennessee.
He married Ruth _____who was
born about 1780 in Virginia. They were married about 1800 in Washington Co.
Tennessee. It is surmised that Ruth's maiden name may have been "Anderson"
due to the middle name of their first child, but has not been confirmed.
Other versions I have seen for her last name is "Judd" and "Brown". We are
attempting to obtain this information.
Henry Jackson Click served in the War of 1812 in Captain Bunch's Rifle
company of East Tennessee Mounted Volunteers at Jonesborough. He later served
under Colonel Lillard in the Regiment of East Tennessee Militia.
He is listed in the 1814 tax list of Capt. Hampton's Company, Washington
Co. Tenn. and 1819 tax list of Capt. Findley's Company, Washington Co.
Tenn.
About 1830 the family moved to Cocke Co. Tennessee, where he drew
a pension from the 4th Infantry in the War of 1812. The family remained there
for over 20 years as evidenced in the writing of his will the 9th June 1849
in Cocke Co. Tenn.
He and Ruth, along with daughter Hepsaba, were listed in the 1850 Census
Cocke Co. Tenn as a farmer, aged 67 yrs. and born in Virginia. In the
"Thomas White
Collection" he is listed as receiving from the Pension Office
his pension certificate.
Along with his son, William Columbus
Click, and other family members, he and Ruth moved to MONROE
CO. Tenn. about 1851. He rented his farm in Cocke Co. to son, Lewis A. Click,
and left. He only resided in Monroe Co. for 4/5 years before his death 28
Aug 1856 (obtained from his pension file). His wife, Ruth, also died shortly
thereafter by 11 May 1857. It is presumed they are both buried in the Click
Family Cemetery near Madisonville. The land where the cemetery is located
is now owned by the TVA.
Henry Click
Last Will and Testament
His will was probated in Monroe Co. Tenn, as evidenced on 26 Feb 1858
by his executor, Charles Robert Hartsell (son-in-law) who sold his grain
and made demand for payment of the rent of the farm in Cocke Co. against
Lewis A. Click for 1855 & 1856. In September, 1857 the heirs petitioned
the court to sell his land.
CLICK CEMETERY DIRECTIONS
Highway 68 South from Sweetwater to
Highway 411 North at Madisonville. On Highway 411 North go past the new Walmart
and Valley Bank on the right side of the road. Just past the Valley Bank
turn right onto Ball Play Road (BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR ODOMETER AT THIS POINT).
Take Ball Play Road 7 miles & turn left on SCENIC RIVER ROAD. Follow
for 3 miles.
There will be an unmarked road to the
right that goes down a hill when you turn
in.
You need to park at the bottom of the
hill and walk up around the road (BIG RUTS). The cemetery is located at the
top of the hill on the right. It sits back in a wooded area and is not
maintained. Be ware of snakes, it is a wooded area and over
grown.
NOTE: If you go past the road to the
turn off to the cemetery on Scenic River Road you will be going down a hill
and at the bottom of the hill the lake is on both sides of the road. YOU'VE
GONE A LITTTLE BIT TOO FAR.
