LUDWIG HENRICH GLUCK

LEWIS HENRY CLICK
APPRECIATION & THANKS
I would first like to give my thanks and appreciation to my cousin,
Gary D. Click, who has done an extensive research on our family in Germany.
He has spent many years researching all lines of our family, and has graciously
shared his information with me. With his information, I have also included
my own research.
If you can't find a link in your Click family, please contact me. I
am currently working on Volume I of our Click family for publishing next
year. If you would like your family included, please contact me.
LUDWIG HENRICH GLUCK was born 23 March 1741 Dannstadt, Ludwigshafen,
(PALATINATE) Germany, son of JOHANN CONRAD GLUCK & SUSANNA
JARDIN.
When he was about 8 or 9 years old his family decided to make a new
life in the promised land of the USA. They boarded a small boat on the Rhine
River and made their 6 to 8 week voyage to Rotterdam to gain passage
on a ship to America.
In Rotterdam they boarded the ship "LYDIA" under command of Capt.
John Randolph. The last port of call was Cowes, England before arriving on
the 9th October, 1749 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The family moved to Lancaster Co. PA where Lewis' father died in 1760.
His mother, Susanna died 1766.
It is unknown when or to whom he married. I speculate that her
name was DORCAS because it seems to be a traditional family girls name.
I have speculated also that her maiden name may have been ALEXANDER based
on the fact that Martin Click, Sr & Betsey Kerlin's third child's middle
name was Alexander and he was a JR, indicating that Martin, Sr's middle
name also was Alexander. It was a custom to name a son with the maiden name
of the mother. I have done minimal research, but have found an Alexander
family in Maryland with a daughter named DORCAS ALEXANDER with no marriage.
The Alexander families are quite prevalent among our Click's in
Greene County, Tennessee.
Family legend tells of Lewis serving in the Revolutionary War, but
no records to date have been found on him. It is said that he molded bullets
during the war.
After the death of his parents, Lewis, as many other German people
had done, followed the path down into the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. The
last tax list that he is found in Shenandoah Co. Virginia is 1784. He
then moved down into Washington Co. North Carolina, which later became Washington
Co. Tennessee. The first tax list in Washington Co Tennessee we find him
on is 1787, however in 1785 Greene County, Tennessee I find what appears
to be a son of Lewis, named William Click. This places for the first
time our Click family in Tennessee within the next year from leaving Shenandoah
Co. Virginia. This tax list from Greene county is in a private
collection and didn't finally surface until around 1991.
Our Click family qualifies as one of the "First Families of
Tennessee", which at the time was in the heart of the CHERKOEE INDIAN
NATION.
We have no death date on Lewis, but has been speculated he died between
1804/18 and most likely buried on his farm on Little Limestone Creek, Washington
Co. Tennessee.
Lewis was living in Washington Co. NC at the time the State of Franklin
was formed. The State of Franklin was formed 1784 and
was no more in 1788. I don't think Lewis was there for
the organization of the state, but arrived shortly thereafter, with
the families from John Glick/Click, Sr , whom I believe is Lewis' uncle.
I think John Click, Sr was the brother of Johannes Conrad
Gluck.
There has been very close association with the families of the Sevier's
and Crockett's. David Crockett was born abt 6 years after my 3rd great
grandfather, Henry Jackson Click, Sr, and his family lived just across the
Nolichuckey River in the same locality as our family. There is little doubt
they were very much involved together politically and personally, as I
find reference that David Crockett visited with Malachi Click's eldest
son, George's family in Texas just prior to the Alamo.
During the period of settlement of this area, the Indians were constantly
being fought, and the settlers driven back into Virginia to their strongholds
for protection of their families.
We, as Click descendants, can be proud that our family has played an
instrumental role in the settlement on the frontiers of America.
Deeds from Washington Co. Tennessee list the heirs when they sold his
land in February, 1818. However, I also find what appears to be some other
sons who were in Greene Co. Tennessee prior to the time Lewis shows
up in Washington Co. Tennessee in 1787 tax lists, which places our family
in Tennessee within one year from the last time he is shown on the
Shenandoah Co. Virginia tax records of 1784. Due to the fact we have
many missing tax lists from the Eastern Tennessee records and no census records
until 1830, it would appear to me he most likely was there too. It is
my opinion that these children must have been dead by the time
Lewis died between 1804/1818. I believe Lewis was alive just prior
to this land being settled by the heirs by only a few years, putting
his death year closer to 1816 or 1817.
To my knowledge our Click family were the only ones in Washington,
Greene, and Cocke counties, Tennessee and no one has seemed to claim these
boys. Due to the timeframe of the documents they couldn't possibly have been
children of any of the known Click sons. They were required to be at least
21 years of age to sign legal documents, and I have therefore based their
birth years from the date of the documents minus 21 years, but they could
have been a few years older.

On the 1830 census HORSE CREEK, Greene Co. Tenn Page 197 is apparently
a son of the above John Spurgeon, whose name was also John Spurgeon age 40-50
(born abt 1780-1790) therefore not making him old enough to sign the deed,
but most likely his father. He was living right in the middle of other allied
families who married into the Click family and then our Click family living
on the next page 198. Here is the order in which they lived, placing this
land right in the middle of the same location that MARTIN CLICK, SR and his
family lived of which his descendants are living on that same page 198 &
Pg 200 is Martin Click, Sr himself. This indication places the land of Francis
right in the middle of our Click family. Although we don't have conclusive
PROOF of his part as a son of Lewis Click, it certainly gives value to the
fact he most likely was a son whom had died prior to the land deed signed
by the heirs of Lewis Click in 1818 Washington Co. Tenn. In the deed it states
Martin was from Greene Co.

Pg 593 Spurgin John - shows in 1787 signing the Tennessee Statehood
petition. This would be the elder John Spurgin who sold land to both the
Click boys. I wonder if perhaps some of these Spurgeon's married some Click
girls along the way.
THIS IS WHERE MALACHI CLICK WOULD FALL INTO THE SCHEME OF THE CHILDREN.
BORN ABT 1769, which to me makes sense AND the fact that MARTIN CLICK &
MATTHEW CLICK were security for Malachi's marriage to Elizabeth Shurley,
also indicates to me a "brother" relationship between the three.
5) GEORGE LEWIS CLICK
Born Abt 1771 Died 30 Dec 1844 Cocke Co. TN
Married Margaret Peggy Jones 28 Aug 1808 Greene Co. TN You will find
many of their children in Cocke Co. TN.
6) MATTHEW CLICK - Not shown as heir on 1818 deed
Born Abt 1774
In the 1840 census records of Henry County, Tennessee is a Matthew
Click. The Baltas Click lines have claimed this to be their ancestor "Mathias
Moss Click", but I think further research is warranted, as I have found unclaimed
Click's in the area of Carroll & Weakley Counties, Tennessee, living
among a son of ABRAHAM MILLER & MARTHA VIRGINIA CLICK in Weakley
Co. Tennessee, a very short distance from the Miller's there. Abraham Miller
had a son Elliott Franklin Miller who's neighbors were the Pate family. Nancy
Click was residing in the household of the Elias S. Pate families and her
grandchildren were residing with Elias S. Pate at a later date with Nancy
residing next door. In the 1830 census of Cocke Co. living RIGHT NEXT DOOR
to Abraham Miller is ANTHONY PATE. In the 1785 tax list with WILLIAM CLICK
is numerous PATE families as well. I also believe that Nancy Click had a
son named MICHAEL CLICK who was residing in 1850 in Marshall Co. Mississippi
where some of Nancy's children moved later. In the 1837 Tennessee Land Grants
Greene County, we find MICHAEL CLICK. I think this Michael may have
been a son of WILLIAM above or MATTHEW and possible husband of this Nancy
Click in Weakley Co TN. I also think that Nancy's maiden name was
PATE, and she's residing as a widow in the household of her brother with
her children. These Pate's all seem to have been born in North Carolina,
and one of Elizabeth Click and Joseph Brown's daughters, Eliza Brown married
Rufus Pate in BLOUNT county, Tennessee. Rufus was also born in North Carolina,
and wonder if there is a connection. I found on the IGI at familysearch a
VALENTINE CLICK who was supposedly from Blount Co. Tennessee, but I haven't
gotten that far to research him. There surely must be a connection to all
of these families, too many similiarities in locations and connections and
living amongst each other.
I also think these Click's in Weakley county are possibly descended
through this line and belong to our family.
REF: TENN MARRIAGE RECORDS 1783-1818 GREENE CO. TENN. SECURITY MARTIN
AND MATHEW CLICK SHOWN ON MARRIAGE RECORDS AS ELIZABETH SHOLLY TO MALACHI
CLICK
This transaction would most likely indicate a close family tie as brothers.
I have never seen Matthew listed anywhere in our family genealogy by previous
researchers. I noticed it quite by accident one day when I was looking
through Malachi's files and notice Matthew's name on the marriage records.
Malachi's and Rebecca Hawkins son, Samuel had a son Matthew.
Have not found any other indications of Matthew other than a marriage
record in Greene Co. Tennessee MATTHEW CLICK to Rachel Millburn 9 Oct 1823
in the manuscript of Mae Twitchell. Could this be a son of this Matthew or
a later life marriage.
7) CATHERINE CLICK - signed her name on the 1818 deed
Born 1776 married Thomas McCollum? Gary D. Click has listed
her with this possible marriage, but no marriage records have been found.
It was based on speculation because Thomas McCollum was the only likely candidate
in the area of Washington Co. Tennessee at the time. So this marriage
has never been proven. - In checking the genealogy of the family of Thomas
McCollum they indicate no marriage to Catherine Click. One thing I recently
have pondered, could this possibly have been the out of wedlock child of
Malachi Click with Sarah Graham? Sarah Graham married David McCollom.
Gary D. Click has the child of Malachi and Sarah Graham listed
as "Catherine McCollom". If we could determine who Malachi and Sarah's
daughter Catherine married and when, this might make the link to Malachi
as son of Lewis. She was born abt 1795 Greene Co. In 1818 when the heirs
signed the deed, if she was unmarried she would have been 23 years
old. Maybe Lewis made provision in his will for her as his
heir and Malachi had already received his portion prior to Lewis' death
and not been eligible for anymore at the time Lewis died, therefore making
CATHERINE MC COLLUM a granddaughter rather than a daughter. I'm not exactly
certain how the year of birth for her was determined.
We do know that there were McCollom's in Marshall Co. Tennessee that
married into the family of George Lewis Click's son, James Gray Click's children.
According to the McCollom researcher from the Washington Co. Tennessee area,
she doesn't know anything about those McCollom's in Marshall Co. TN. Those
McCollom's still need further research.
8) JOHN CLICK - Not named as heir in 1818 deed
Born abt 1777 Died before 22 July 1805 Richland Creek, Greene
Co. Tennessee
Could this be the "OLE JONAS" that was spoken of from oral tradition
in the family lines of Malachi?
Ref: Greene Co. Tenn Tax List, Taxable Returns of Captain Reese Gullock's
Company for the year 1798 (I HAVE BASED THE BIRTH YEAR ON THIS TAX
LIST)
CLEATS, JOHN 34-1/2 acres, 1 white poll and 25 squirrel scalps
FERINSWORTH (Farnsworth), George and John
GIRDNER, Michael
WILSON, Epraham 166 acres no polls
This just shows how badly these names were misspelled.
Others living in the same district and on this list who's surnames
married into our Click family: Crums, Hughs, Jones, Ricker, & Solomon
Wilhite (Wilhoit).
Ref: Greene Co. Tenn Tax List, Taxables of Captain James Lauderdale's
Company for the year 1800
The only possible listing I can find for John that would even come
close is a
GLAUTS, JOHN no land 1 white pole
If this is him this appears to be the only possible candidate for him
on this tax list. The transcribers of the list may have read the name incorrectly
and spelled how they saw it.
The rest of the men involved in the deed of 1803 below, do appear here
as well
FARNSWORTH, Henry 30__ Richland Creek no poles & apparently bunch

TEMPLE, James no land 1 white poll 1 black pole and 12 squirrel

This puts the Everett & Ricker family living in the Camp Creek
area of Greene County where the Click's & Moncier's lived. We do have
a Ricker marriage in the lines of Martin Click, Sr & Betsey
Kerlin.
9) HENRY
JACKSON CLICK, SR
Born abt 1781 - Died 1856 Monroe Co. Tennessee
Follow his link for more information on Henry, my 3rd great
grandfather
Married Ruth _______
10) ELIZABETH CLICK
Born 5 Mar 1783 Shenandoah Co. Virginia Died between 1850/1860 Blount
Co. TN
Married JOSEPH BROWN 10 April 1803 Washington Co. TN
11) MARTHA VIRGINIA CLICK "MARY"
Born 1784 Virginia Died March 1852/4 May 1854 Platte Co.
Missouri
(Note: In the deeds mentioned above no name is recorded for this daughter,
only her husband signed the deed.)
Married ABRAHAM MILLER
After tracking Abraham Miller from Cocke Co. Tenn in 1830 with families
of his neighbors to Platte Co. Missouri, I am satisfied I have finally found
their descendants. I believe one son Peter remained in Greene County and
then moved to Texas Co. Missouri around the daughter of Henry Jackson Click,
Sr - Rachel Click and Jeremiah Murr.
12) DAVID CLICK
Born abt 1785 Died Before 1818
Married Catherine _____
David was not named as heir in 1818 deed, but we know that he was paying
taxes on the land of Lewis Click.
There is speculation as to the parentage of MALACHI CLICK. He also
may have been a son of Lewis or perhaps a nephew, whom was orphaned at a
young age, and taken in by Lewis. Whatever the association, there is no doubt
Malachi was very much a part of our family. He and Martin Click, Sr
were especially close in their business transactions together, along with
Malachi's son, George. George lost his mother, REBECCA HOWELL, 1794
in an accident crossing the Nolichucky River on horseback when 5 months
old and she drowned.
Malachi also was married to REBECCA HAWKINS about 1799. Some of Malachi's
children moved to Collin Co. Texas area, others remained in Greene Co. TN.
Rebecca is buried in the old Herman Cemetery, Greene Co. TN.
Malachi also had some other marriages which produced no children, and
one bastard child by Sarah Graham born abt 1795, Catherine. Court records
indicate he supplied financial care for his daughter.
