Mother Friday

In the Tambov province, a woman payed no heed to the taboo against spinning on Friday. She spun and spun until dinner time when she was overtaken by a powerful sleep. As soon as she dropped off, the door flew open and in stepped Mother Friday.

The Goddess was dressed all in white and was very angry. The rest of the family stood by in utter astonishment as Friday flew straight to the spinning woman. She gathered some hemp boon from the floor and threw it in the woman's eyes before disappearing into thin air.

When the woman awoke, she began to scream about the pain in her eyes. In horror, the other women told her what had happened and told her she had brought this punishment upon herself.

The woman listened to the story and cried out "Oh Mother Friday, have mercy upon me. I will light a candle for you and tell all to join in your worship."

That night, Friday returned and removed the boon from the woman's eyes. She never again carded fleece or spun yarn on Mokosz' sacred day.
