MY 1973
VW THING
page

Updated 6-10-98!

VW Things are pretty rare in Michigan.
I got mine for $600 with a bad transmission.
(My income tax return last year BTW)
Fixing the transmission was fairly easy,
but the body still needs a lot of work. >:Þ

Here's the car in non-working condition when I first got it home
The trans is totally locked up here.

This is the first shot after fixing the transmission. :)
This is right after the last picture. It was posed... The Trans may be fixed but it turned out I also had a starter problem. >:P It sure rolled easy though.

These are two views I hope you never have to
see if you own a Thing!!

While that one tire is named Doug the others don't have names. I just call them all Darrell >;)
Notice that the car was originally yellow too!

A cousin posing in it.
This is the car after being used as a daily driver all summer.
Heck, I delivered pizza in it almost daily! (with the windshield up of course!)

And Finally here it is with the top up.
I only have four solid side windows. :( But dig those crazy white-walls!

So far over the winter I've painted all the chrome flat black and am in the process of rebuilding the engine. The #1 cylinder's rings went bad late in the fall and had real bad blow back. I also have ordered/received a lot of German military surplus Type 181 parts. Including a green top, night time black out lights and brush guards. By the time it's over 50 degrees all the time I plan on really looking military... sigh :)

{I don't have a heater in it... double sigh :( }

I've finally got it painted!

The final german surplus parts arrived and now the car is done
in the right colors! Well, at least closer to the right colors... >:P

Me and my lovely car!
Not much room in there with all the military stuff in the trunk
Me agian. I got the German border police BDU a long time ago, now it fits in the over all image. :)
