This table lists every General Officer that served with The Army of Northern Virginia.
Generals are listed alphabetically. Date of rank is given in the rows next to the name.
The last row gives information about the General, i.e. died, killed, transferred, resigned.
Sometimes these definitions are blurred such as the case with Stonewall Jackson, he
could be listed as "killed" (because of wounds suffered at Chancellorsville) or "died",
as he did not succumb for some days later, as it is still unclear whether he died of his
wounds or died from pneumonia. As the date of death was some time later, "died" is
used in this case. J.E.B. Stuart, clearly died from his wounds and only a short time
after the engagement at Yellow Tavern, therefore he is listed as "killed". If a general
was transferred to another Army or Theater and did not return it is so noted, such as
the case with General Cumming. No notation of General Longstreet being transferred
west from Sept 1863 to April 1864 is noted as he returned to The Army of Northern
Virginia and it was understood from the beginning that he was only on loan to the
Army of Tennessee.

If you are a beginning student or new to the study of The War Between The States, you should be aware that this is by no means a listing of all Confederate generals, this table only lists generals that at one time or another served with The Army of Northern Virginia and not its previous incarnation as The Army of the Potomac. Therefore, the listing is limited to general officers who served in the ANV, which dates from 31 May 1862 to 12 April 1865.
