Australian researcher Terry Foenander has been researching this subject for
some time now, along with his excellent research regarding the American Civil
War Navies (which is linked to
in the Navy section). In Asians In The Civil War his research primarily focuses
on Asians that
served the Union, which considering the inherent difficulty in researching
Confederate records
(much of which did not survive the war) is understandable. He has, however,
found more than
a handful of Asians serving the Confederacy in this important and original
work.
Association to Commemorate the Chinese Serving in the American Civil War
Dr. Gordon Kwok JD is in the process of producing a well researched
and remarkable work
regarding this long neglected subject. Like Mr. Foenander's work the primary
focus is on
Chinese serving the Union (the same inherent difficulties regarding CS records
apply).
Dr. Kwok has managed to unearth more than a few Chinese who served the
Confederacy, however. That Dr. Kwok and Mr. Foenander occasionally collaborate
is much to our benefit.
A debt of gratitude is owed to both these gentlemen in showing that the
Confederacy was
not as monochrome as many may assume.
Dr. Kwok has done extensive updating of his section of Chinese in Confederate
service.
