History of the Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railway

3/11/99 Incorporated as Aurora, Wheaton & Chicago Railroad.

9/18/00 Construction started at Aurora.

4/10/01 Renamed Aurora, Elgin & Chicago Railway to take into account Elgin and Batavia branches.

7/29/02 First six cars delivered from Niles Car Co.

8/25/02 Service started from Aurora to Wheaton and 52nd Avenue in Chicago.

end 9/02 Service started from Batavia to Eola (later Batavia) Junction on Wheaton - Aurora line

5/26/03 Branch from Wheaton to Elgin opened.

3/11/05 Service started over Metropolitan West Side Elevated Railway into Wells St terminal. Local service from 52nd to Des Plaines Avenue taken over by "L" company.

3/18/06 Cook County Branch opened from Bellwood to Oak Ridge and Mt Carmel Cemeteries in Hillside. Joint funeral service started with "L" 6/4/06.

3/26/06 Reformed as Aurora, Elgin & Chicago Railroad merging with the Elgin, Aurora & Southern which operated City cars in Elgin and Aurora as well as the interurban line from Carpentersville, Elgin, Geneva, Batavia, Aurora to Yorkville (Fox River Division).

9/21/09 Service started from Geneva Junction on the Wheaton - Elgin line to West Chicago. Extended to Geneva 12/09 and then over the Fox Valley division to St Charles 7/25/10.

8/9/19 Entered Receivership.

12/13/21 Fox River Division reformed as Aurora, Elgin & Fox River Electric Co. finally coming out of receivership in 1/24.

7/1/22 New company Chicago, Aurora and Elgin Railroad formed to take over the AE&CR third rail division and coming out of receivership.

1926 Samuel Insull takes control of the railroad.

10/1/26 Westchester branch opens from Bellwoood to Roosevelt Road, service provided by CRT. Extended to 22nd/Cermak 12/1/30.

10/31/26 Passenger service on Cook County branch terminated ( due to proximity of Westchester line). Service over the last two years provided by a CNS&MR car (30, renumbered 27 on CA&ER).

4/30/31 Cook County service abandoned west of Wolf Road.

6/7/32 Insull resigns as Chairman of the company.

7/21/32 Into receivership.

1934 Funeral service ended on Cook County branch and tracks west of IC overpass abandoned.

10/31/37 Geneva and St Charles branch closed and replaced with buses to Lakewood on the Elgin branch. (Fox Valley interurban service had ended 3/31/35).

12/31/39 Street operation ended in Aurora with opening of the new riverside terminal.

6/28/46 New company Chicago, Aurora & Elgin Railway formed to take the company out of receivership.

12/9/51 Westchester branch abandoned and cta service cut back to Des Plaines Avenue.

9/20/53 Through CA&ER service to Wells St abandoned due to construction of the Congress Expressway. Services from the west terminated at a revised terminal at Des Plaines Av with cross platform connection to cta. Last service car (421) left Wells St at 1230am.

7/3/57 Passenger service terminated at 1215 pm stranding 5000-6000 commuters downtown.

pm 7/3/57 Service replaced by Leyden Motor Coach between Wheaton and Harlem & Lake station on Lake St "L".

6/10/59 Freight service suspended.

6/19/59 Last electric freight movement.

7/6/61 Permanent Abandonment.

4/6/62 Last movement of a CA&ER car (320) over Aurora branch hauled by Commercial Metals ex EJ&E loco 212.

late 4/62 Commercial Metals start scrapping operations on main line.

8/63 Last preserved cars left Wheaton for Trolleyville and Seashore Museum.

end 63 Scrapping operations completed.
