Advanced Dungeons and Dragons is a role-playing game. A role-playing game, RPG for short, is an imaginative world. Real life people assume the roles of characters who travel through and have adventures in these worlds. Some say RPG's are stories acted out in one's dining room instead of a Hollywood sound stage. The settings of role-playing games can be anything or anytime, from pre-historic to medieval to the far future. The limits of these worlds are bounded only by the imagination of everyone involved. Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, produced by TSR, is considered the grandfather of role-playing games. The settings of AD+D are usually medieval but are adaptable to any time frame. The worlds of AD+D are chock full of creatures, gods and legendary fables entwined with mythical magic. In fact, the game was designed so one could adventure along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf, or even the thunder god Thor.
