Butterfinger: N.H. woman wins top prize in contest -- Oct. 28, 1993

NESTLE BUTTERFINGER: N.H. woman wins top prize in Butterfinger contest

DATE: Oct. 28, 1993

GLENDALE, Calif. -- Solving what has been dubbed the "crime of the century," Nancy Fredholm of Hudson, N.H., won the top prize of $50,000 by correctly identifying Krusty the Clown as the thief in the Nestle Chocolate & Confections' "Who Laid a Finger on Bart's Butterfinger?" contest. Ten thousand runners-up received a "Who Laid a Finger on Bart's Butterfinger?" T-shirt.

According to to Nestle Chocolate & Confections spokesperson Tricia Bowles, approximately 50,000 people nationwide entered the contest, which ran from Aug. 30 through Oct. 14 this year. The contest stemmed from Bart Simpson's continual warning that "Nobody Better Lay a Finger on My Butterfinger."

"Butterfinger fans across the country participated in this exciting 'whodunnit' sleuth contest," said Bowles. "For Nestle, it was a way to give back to our loyal consumers who have assisted the brand in becoming one of the most popular candy bars in the country."

A special television commercial revealing Krusty's identity as the Butterfinger thief ran Oct. 28 during "The Simpsons" Halloween special on Fox Television, and will be aired again on Oct. 31. The commercial names Fredholm as the novice detective who solved the "crime of the century" by successfully identifying Krusty as the candy culprit.

"I've never won anything of this magnitude before," exclaimed Fredholm, a registered nurse and mother of two. "A portion is definitely going towards our daughters' college funds. My husband and I may also buy a new car and upgrade our computer equipment."

Nearly 65 million Butterfinger bars with specially designed wrappers appeared in stores nationwide. Inside each marked bar was a suspect's alibi. Because only five of the six suspects had alibis for the time of the dastardly crime, contestants were able to deduce "whodunnit" by a simple process of elimination.

Suspects included Bart's father, Homer Simpson, and sister, Lisa, as well as Krusty the Clown, Nelson the bully, Otto the bus driver and Homer's mean boss, Mr. Burns.

The contest is the largest Butterfinger promotion ever undertaken in the popular brand's 65-year history. Nestle Chocolate & Confections is a division of Nestle Food Co.
