Pin, stick, hang

“With Simpson merchandise selling like crazy and Simpson gin wetting whistles worldwide, the money was pouring in.”
-- Narrator, in "Behind the Laughter."

It's time for Moe's Tavern illuminated wall clock
When it comes to Simpsons clocks, nobody's ever made them better than Wesco Ltd. One of the company's best products is a clever new Moe's Tavern illuminated wall clock, which we just added to our own collection.

Its design is inspired by real bar clocks. It's about 12 inches in diameter with mock chrome trim and large hour, minute and second hands. Near the bottom is a Moe's logo that lights up and flashes, either continuously or on the hour -- or, heaven forbid, you can turn it off to save the batteries. (The clock requires five "AA" batteries, which are not included.)

Along the clock face is written: "It's Moe Better at Moe's" and "Where Nobody Knows Your Name," a play on lyrics for the "Cheers" theme song. Cans of Duff Beer are pictured at the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions, while a bottle of Duff stands at the noon spot.

There are some great pictures of this clock and other Simpsons merchandise at the Wesco Web site. The site also shows alarm clocks, watches, radios, room guards and even an automated money bank. Unfortunately, the site doesn't sell retail, although it lists some U.K. sites where you can buy its clocks. (We list many of the clocks in our Value Guide below on this page.)

U.S. buyers can find many of the older Wesco clocks at Sunway Co.

Sponsored link: ThingsFromAnotherWorld.com, has everything from T-shirts to action figures.

In addition to the Moe clock, some of our favorite Wesco items:
  • Homer's head radio. Released in 1999, the radio is shaped like Homer's head. You switch stations by rotating his left eyeball, and increase the volume with his right eye.
  • Bart with spray pain alarm clock. Released in 2000, it features a 6-inch-high figure of Bart with a can of paint as he crouches over a sidewalk in a street scene. The exquisite detail -- fire hydrant, manhole, street gate, street lamp -- are truly remarkable.
  • Homer Duff Beer alarm clock. Released in 1999, this is a 7-inch-high clock shaped like a can of Duff Beer. When the alarm sounds, it plays a 30-second clip of "The Simpsons" theme song, as doors on the front of the can open up to reveal Homer sitting on a sofa.
  • Living room talking radio alarm clock. Released in 1997, this was the first Simpsons diorama from Wesco and it's still one of the best. A figure of Homer lays in his underwear on the sofa as Bart sits over him, pouring a cup of liquid on his face. The TV lights up when the alarm sounds.
2002 wall calendar visits the silver screen
From frequent film parodies to subtle winks at movie moments, "The Simpsons" has always had a love affair with the big screen. And movie-related humor is the center of The Simpsons 2002 Fun Calendar, which hit stores in August in another collaboration of Harper Collins and Bongo Entertainment.

Also in stores now is a 2002 Simpsons desktop calendar.

2002 The Simpsons Fun Calendar designed by Bongo Entertainment. The calendar can be ordered from Amazon.com (Sponsored link). See an enlarged photo.

According to a description from Harper, "The Simpsons and the rest of the citizens of Springfield make their way to the silver screen in this 12-month calender. Sit back and relax as Homer, Bart, and the rest of the family take you to the movies and offer you refreshing romance, salty adventure, buttery mystery, and biting comedy. Popcorn not included."

Sponsored links: Amazon.com has The 2002 Simpsons wall calendar and the 2002 Simpsons desk calendar.

The 2002 Simpsons 365-day desktop calendar offers a trivia quiz format, a likely improvement over the quotes in the 2001 desktop version. Harper promotional materials describe the 640-page desktop calendar this way: "How well do you know The Simpsons? Test your know-how and expertise every day of the year with this mind-numbing, brainteasing, eye-popping, thought-twisting, headbusting calendar/collection of perplexing puzzlers, questionable queries, and bewildering bafflers taken straight from episodes of the longest running animated show in prime time."

Buttons/pins
Button-Up produced numerous pinback buttons -- you know, the kind of round buttons with a sharp pin that slides into a holder on the back.

Be aware that bootleg buttons are extremely common. As with many other unlicensed items, bootleg Simpsons button designs are often distorted or crudely drawn. To check for authenticity, look for Matt Groening's stamped-on signature near the button design and the 20th Century Fox trademark along the edge.of the button in very, very tiny writing.

Most of the information on the Bongo promotional buttons listed here comes courtesy of Nobby N. Coburn (nobby@netcom.com). Nobby obtained these giveaways at the San Diego Comic Con. The next of these conventions is July 20-23, 2000.

Auto window suction cup hangers, 1990

The signs were produced by H&L Entertainment of El Cajon, Calif. Offered without packaging, they now generally sell for $3-$4 each in near-mint to mint condition. All have 1990 copyrights.

Collectors plates
Could there be anything more Simpsons than Franklin Mint collectors plates? There are seven plates in the series. Each is 8 inches in diameter and suitable for hanging or displaying. Each comes with a "custom-designed plate stand."

According to promotional literature, each plate "is a limited edition ... bearing an original design and crafted of fine porcelain, bordered and hand-numbered in 24 karat gold. Each plate also bears the (stamped-on) signature mark of Matt Groening -- adding greatly to its significance." Manufacturing of the plates, it adds, was limited to 24 firing days.

Backs of the plates warn: "A decorative accessory. Not to be used for food consumption. Pigments used for color may be toxic." Each also comes with a "certificate of authenticity" and white plastic foam container. The base cost of each plate is $29.95. But add in $2.37 tax and $3.95 for shipping and handling, the total cost comes to $36.27.

Franklin Mint, the last time we checked, no longer had the plates available, which should help the values rise, although we see little evidence of that. Maximum value is for plates with original packaging and accompanying paperwork.

Other
Here are those Fun Calendars and a few other things to pin, stick or hang.
