Q: How many trivia games? A: 5 and counting
As we write this, there are now five -- count 'em, five -- variations on Simpsons trivia games from Cardinal Industries. And if recent history holds up, there will be a sixth before you finish reading this page.

In September 2000, Cardinal Industries released the first one -- a very nice 7-1/2-inch-square trivia game in a collector tin with a design showing dozens of Springfield characters. Over the next year, Cardinal produced a trivia game in a tin shaped like the Simpsons family members, one shaped like Bart's head and one shaped like Homer's head. Then a version in a cardboard box appeared in fall 2001. Each game features trivia questions at five levels of difficulty.

But there are key differences, and it's not just packaging. There are at least three different sets of trivia cards and some different accessories. Based on the versions we've obtained, this is a basic summary of each:

  • Simpsons Trivia Game with Springfield characters tin. 200 cards with 1,000 questions, mostly general ones about the show. Two-hundred of the questions are devoted to identifying most of the 286 characters featured on a 13-by-17-inch glossy cast poster that comes with the game. The game also includes 25 character cards with five each of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie; a numbered silhouette poster to match up questions with the characters; a four-page instruction booklet, and a die. The tin also was originally held in a cardboard display holder.
  • Simpsons Trivia Game with family members tin. This one offers the same questions as the tin with Springfield characters. The packaging is also tin, made in the general shape of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie.
  • Bart's Trivia Game. 200 cards with 1,000 questions. Rules are similar to the two previous games, but the questions are all about Bart. The game's 25 character cards show Ralph, Otto, Nelson, Milhouse and Bart. The game also includes a "chalkboard pad" for use with chalkboard trivia questions, a four-page instruction booklet and a die.
  • Homer's Trivia Game. 200 cards with 1,000 questions. Rules are much the same as other versions, but the questions are all about Homer. And instead of character cards, the game features "Homer's Favorite Stuff Cards," with images of Marge, a donut, a Duff Beer can, food, and a bowling pin and ball. The game also includes the 12-by-17-inch character poster with the silhouette poster, a four-page instruction booklet, and a die.
  • Simpsons Trivia in a Box. It has identical contents to the original Simpsons Trivia Game, but the 10-by-7-3/4-by-4-1/4-inch packaging is made of cardboard instead of tin.
To summarize, if you have the original Simpsons trivia in a tin, you can safely pass on the second one with a tin shaped like the Simpsons family members -- and probably skip the one in a cardboard box. But the Bart and Homer games each offer new questions and somewhat different game play.
