Notes for Joshua Warren:
from "Waltham as a Precinct of Watertown and as a Town 1630-1884" by Edmund L. Sanderson
JOSHUA WARREN lived on Warren Street just west of the Watertown line. He was born in 1668 the son of Daniel and Mary (Barron) Warren and grandson of John Warren who came to Watertown in 1630. The later was selectman in 1636 and 1640. He was granted by the town about 290 acres and purchased other lots. One of these purchases was a lot of 16 acres upon which his son Daniel was living when John made his will in 1667. Daniel was married in 1650 so may have built in that year. By five deeds between 1700 and 1704 he sold or gave to his son Joshua nearly all his land including his homestead of 20 acres occupying the same site as the 16 acres he had received from his father. About 1695 Joshua married Rebecca Church a granddaughter of Richard Church of the Mayflower. They had twelve children of whom the youngest was Phinehas and to him in 1745 they deeded "for a satisfactory and valuable consideration" the same homestead of 20 acres and two other lots. He had in the course of his lifetime purchased and sold several other tracts of land. Rebecca died in 1757 nearly seventy-nine years old and he in 1760 in his ninety-second year.

Per SAVAGE, VOL 1 DICT. FIRST SETTLERS OF New England
ADAMS, HENRY, Briantree, son of the preeceding born in England about 1604 as is thought, may, rather than his father be regarded as the town clerk of 1640, married 17 November 1643, Elizabeth daughter of Moses Paine, had Eleazer, born 5 August 1644; Jasper, 23 June 1647; removed to that part of Dedham, which became Medfield, of which also he was first town clerk there had Elizabeth 11 Novomber 1649; John, and Henry, twins 14 July 1652; Moses, 26 October 1654; Henry, again, 19 November 1657; and Samuel, 10 December 1661, who died young. He was of artillery company 1652, representative 1659, 1665, 1674 and 1675, the lieutenant killed by the Indians 21 February 1676, at his own door, as mentioned by Increase Mather in history of King Philip's war. His wife was mortally wounded the same night, at the house of Rev. Mr. Wilson, though she lived a week.

From NEHGS, v. 7, pp. 39-45, "Pedigree of the Adams Family"
P.41 - "Henry, ..., settled in Medfield, where he was killed in the second year of Phillip's war, and his wife likewise, in the most tragic manner. Her name was Elizabeth Paine, and they were married in 1643."
(footnote - page 41) " 'The Lieutenant of the town, Adams by name, was shot down by his own door, and his wife mortally wounded by a gun fired afterwards accidentally in the house.' " - Hubbard, Indian Wars, Pt. i. 63. 'The same night the Lieutenant's widow, being at Mr. Wilson's the minister's house, being upon a bed in the chamber, divers soldiers and comanders being in the room underneath, Capt. Jacob having a gun in his hand half bent, with the muzzle upward, he being taking his leave to be gone to his quarters, by some accident the gun fired through, and shot floor, mat, and through and through the body of the Lieutenant's widow that lay upon the bed, and slew her also.' - Gookin's Hist. Praying Indians. This happened 21 Feb. 1676."

Notes for John Warren:
From "Bullard and Allied Families"
He had a homestead and seven other lots, aggregating 188 acres. John Warren, though a member of the Puritan church, was in sympathy with the Quakers, and was the subject of much criticism and abuse by certain church officials. He retained his membership in the church, however, and died, at peace with its doctrines, December 13, 1667, aged 82 years. His wife Margaret (surname unknown), died November 6, 1662. His will dated November 30, 1667, was proved December 17 of that year..."

Per SAVAGE, VOL 4 DICT. FIRST SETTLERS OF New England
JOHN, Watertown, came probably in 1630, in the fleet with Sir Richard Saltonstall, then aged about 45, and having wife and children (four certainly are named in his will, and of them only Elizabeth could be born here). There may have been others, but no record of birth or death is found. He was admitted freeman 18 May 1631, chosen selectman 1636-40. Late in life he fell under the censure of the laws, unwisely levelled at dissenting from the religious course of the major part of the inhabitants and Bond informs us of proceedings against him in 1651, 1654, and 1661; but he died in peace, 13 December 1667, aged 82. His wife Margaret died 6 November 1662. She was probably the mother of all his children John, born 1622; Mary; and Daniel, born 1628; beside Elizabeth who married about 1654, James Knapp. Mary married 30 Oct. 1642, John Bigelow.

Notes for Ellis Barron:
Per SAVAGE'S Genealogical Dictionary of New England Settlers, v. 1
BARRON, ELLIS, or ELLIZ, Watertown, freeman 2 June 1641, brought from England probably three or four children for Bond names the issue in this order, Ellis, Mary, who married 10 December 1650, Daniel Warren; Susanna, who married 14 December 1653, Stephen Randall; Hannah, who married abt. 1659, Simon Coolidge; John; Sarah, born 4 July 1640; Moses, 1 March 1643; and Peter, a soldier in Moseley's Company killed by the Indians September 1675. He had two wives: Grace (thought to be mother of all those children), and Hannah, widow of Timothy Hawkins, married 4 December 1653; was constable 1658, selectman 1668, and died 30 October 1676. His will made four days before, proved 19 December following, provides for widow, the seven children remaining after loss of Peter, and for grandchild Elizabeth Barron.

From POPE, The Pioneers of Massachusetts:
BARRON, Ellis, and Elliz, Watertown, Freeman June 2, 1641; proprietor; bought meadow in Cambridge in 1653. Wife Grace. Ellis, age about 20 in 1653 [Middlesex Files] (married 14 (10) 1658, Hannah Hawkins), Mary (married December 10, 1650, Daniel Warren), Susanna (married 14 (10) 1653 Stephen Randall), Hannah (married 17 (9) 1658, Simon Coolidge), John, Sarah born 25 (4) 1640, Moses born (1) 1643. Notes for Henry Adams:
Per SAVAGE, VOL 1 DICT. FIRST SETTLERS OF New England
HENRY, Braintree, came early to our country, and tradition says from Braintree was part, i. e. the portion for ten heads. Perhaps he was the first clerk of the town, after separating from Boston, though more likely is it that his son of the same name had the honor; and he died or was buried 8 October 1646, leaving by tradition eight sons yet only five are named in his will, 1646, proved 8 June 1647, where appear Peter, John, Joseph, Edward, Samuel, and daughter Ursula. Of this daughter as tradition took no notice, it may be that the number eight applied to sons means in truth children seven sons and one daughter but names enough for the sons may be seen, and certainly one son good, if not two beyond the deviees in the will, as Henry, Thomas, Jonathan, in some reports called William. The inscription on the monument erected by his descendant, John Adams, second President of memor. of Henry Adams who took his flight from the Dragon persecution, in Devonshire, England and alighted with eight sons, near Mt. Wollaston. One of the sons returned to England and, after taking some time to explore the country, four removed to Medfield, and the neighboring towns, two to Chelmsford. One only, Joseph, who lies here at his left hand, remained here; who was an original proprietor in the township of Braintree incorporated 1639."

Per POPE, Pioneers of Massachusetts, p.10:
"ADAMS, Henry, Sen., Braintree, had land grant at Mt. Wollaston 24 (12) 1639-40, 40 acres for 10 heads. Signed petition about meadows in 1646. [Arch. 45.] He was buried 8 (8) 1646. Nuncupative will probated 8 (4) 1647, on testimony of Benjamin Allbe and Richard Brackett. Inventory filed, bequeathed to wife; to sons Peter, John, Joseph, Edward and Samuel, and daughter Ursula. House and lands, etc. Books to be divided among his children. Money due to son Samuel for ground bought of him; part of his land to return to the town. John (probably this son), deposed at Cambridge 7 (8) 1656, age about 35 years [Middlesex Files], Samuel m. Mary Eaglesfield, q.v. [Henry, town clerk, lieutenant, owner of a mill afterwards at Medfield, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Moses Paine, is believed to have been another son of Henry, Senior; but the writer has found no proof of this nor any trace of the origin of the family, in any contemporaneous document.]"

Per NEHGS Register, v. 79 (1925), p. 217
"The English Home of Henry Adams, of Braintree, Mass. -- During the last hundred years at least four erroneous claims have been made about the English home of the well-known Adams family of Braintree, Mass. In 1823 President John Adams (John, Joseph, Joseph, Henry) erected a monument in Quincy to Henry Adams, his immigrant ancestor, the inscription stating that he 'took flight from the Dragon Persecution in Devonshire in England.' In 1853, a long pedigree, purporting to exist in an original manuscript in England, was printed in the (NEHGS) Register, which set forth that Henry Adams was descended from a landed Adams family of Fenn and Waton in Stoke-Gabriel, co. Devon, which, it was claimed, was derived from the baronial family of Ap Adam of Tidenham and Beverstone, co. Gloucester. The late Colonel Chester and others showed this pedigree to be a worthless forgery (see Register, v. 7, pp. 39-41, v. 31, p. 333, v. 34, pp. 432-433, and v. 37, pp. 159-160) Because Braintree, Mass., was named for the parish of Braintree, co. Essex, England, the late Charles Francis Adams, about 1900, conjectured that Henry Adams might have come from Essex, and a Henry Adams was located near Chelmsford in that county who seemed to him to be, possibly, the emigrant to New England; but this supposition was certainly erroneous.... Henry Adams, the founder of the Braintree family, was born about 1583 at Barton St. David, co. Somerset. At least four generations of his ancestors resided there, and the Adams name is found on records in the immediate vicinity of that parish as far back as 1327."

Notes for Moses Paine:
Per SAVAGE, VOL 3 DICT. FIRST SETTLERS OF New England
MOSES, Braintree, freeman 2 June 1641, had estate in Cambridge, Concord, and at Piscataqua, as well as Braintree, and three children to which by will of 17 June 1643, he divided his property half to Moses, made executor, one quarter to daughter Elizabeth and the other to son Stephen, who was to be under Moses' government until 23 years old. These were all born in England. Besides he adds codicile three days later, one day before his death giving wife Judith twenty shillings to be paid within a certain time. The will was proved 30 October 1643, and his inventory returned the same days, shows rather large estate yet without the sums due to him from England. Of the four appraisers, half were Guilford men, which appears strange, but the provision for his widow seems more strange. She had been not long his wife having been widow of the first Edmund Quincy, brought him no children and in few years married Robert Hull. Elizabeth married 17 November 1643, Henry Adams, and was casualty - killed 21 February 1676 in a few hours after her husband was shot.

Notes for John Nicholas Copeland:
from Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy: Virginia
[p.21] CHUCKATUCK MONTHLY MEETING (also called Nansemond Monthly Meeting)
In the latter part of 1658 John Copeland was in England and in 1661 we hear of his presence in London and in 1667 he was married, for the first time. The record of his marriage describes him as being from "Lockington, North Cave, in the county of York. He married again in 1677 (presumably in England) after the death of his first wife in 1675. Ten years later (1687) he is again in America, as a letter to George Fox mentions that he is in Virginia. His signature appears many times in the Chuckatuck record between 1679-96. In 1691 he entered for the third time into the state of matrimony and, as has been seen, Story lodged in his house at Chuckatuck in 1698. His residence seems to have been a frequent meeting place for the Friends of the Chuckatuck area. Bowden gives the date of his death as the ninth of the first month 1718 and says he was buried at North Cave, England. In connection with John Copeland a news item of June 1940 becomes most interesting: "Jamestown, Virginia - Possibly the oldest example of American pewter in existence was excavated recently during archeological work at Jamestown Island … It consists of the fragment of a spoon ‘by Joseph Copeland’. It is dated ‘Chuckatuck 1675’". This Joseph Copeland was probably a relative of John Copeland, according to Boddie the Isle of Wight historian, and inherited the estate of Major Taberer of that County. It should be possible to show that all the Copelands of Virginia Quaker tradition are descendants or relatives of this most unusual man - John Copeland.
