Flyers, September 17th 2005, misty day after slight frost. Although they appear to be close, the trees are actually a third of a mile away.
How it's done. Frequency Peg-board. There are 36 frequency channels on the standard model aircraft band of 35MHz.
Each peg is numbered to match a frequency channel. The 36 channels available, are numbered from 55, which is 34.950MHz, to 90 which is 35.300MHz, with a 10KHz spacing. Each flyers Transmitter contains a frequency crystal which radiates a signal corresponding to just one of the numbered frequencies. The particular fliers airborne Receiver will contain a crystal matching the frequency number of the transmitter. This allows a multiple number of aircraft to fly at the same time. This club uses only the 18 even numbers.
When a flyer wishes to fly, he removes the peg corresponding to his allocated frequency from the peg board and clips it on to his transmitter antenna. Only the flyer then holding that peg is allowed to fly on that particular frequency. If another modeller is waiting to use that particular frequency the first flyer surrenders the peg to the second flyer at the end of his/her flight.
When that particular frequency peg is no longer required it is returned to the peg-board.
The nature of the radio signal dictates that if two flyers simultaneously operate on the same frequency, the two transmitters will be radiating different sets of instructions, which will result in a corrupted signal to each receiver, which in turn will cause both planes to crash. © Tom Sharp 2005
