Alcoholism isn't just a social problem. Too much booze can damage your liver, pancreas, brain, nerves and cardiovascular system. Yet the cravings can be so strong that alcoholics may drink even though it's obviously killing them. What can help them stop?
STANDARD PRACTICE
Traditional medicine offers hospitalization to help alcoholics "dry out"-
at a cost of thousands of dollars--and then puts them into a 12-step program (such as the one you'd find at alcoholics anonymous) that seeks to change their way of viewing the world. But only 15% of the millions of alcoholics ever receive treatment--often with only temporary results.
HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES
HERBS:
KUDZU:
Ancient Chinese remedy for alcoholism.
SUPPLEMENTS
Some alcoholics can be helped dramatically with large doses of vitamin and mineral supplements, taken with copious amounts of water, fresh fruits and vegetables and juices. In fact, in one study 32 patients with high blood pressure were put on such a diet for seven months (60% of their food was uncooked). Eighty percent (80%) of those who smoked or drank simply stopped, spontaneously.
L-GLUTAMINE and L-CARNITINE:
The alcoholic should consider taking about two grams per day of L-glutamine and one gram per day of L-carnitine.
During the addiction-breaking phase and after the alcoholic is dry, light aerobic exercise on a regular basis (such as walking) will help reinforce these nutritional weapons.
DIETRAY GUIDELINES
In the 1950s, renowned nutritionist Roger Williams showed conclusively that alcohol craving represented a nutritional deficiency. In experiments with rats, only 10% of those with full nutrition became "alcoholic." When the nutrients were cut by one-third, roughly 33% developed alcoholism. When nutrients were tripled, giving the rats "super" nutrition, alcoholism was cut to one.
