HEARTBURN
See STOMACH PROBLEMS. Heartburn is a burning, painful sensation in the esophagus and sometimes the throat, caused by the acid stomach contents coming into the esophagus.
It can be caused by a variety of factors from stress, poor nutrition to various diseases (altered physiology). Heartburn is a sign of problems which cause high acidity of the stomach secretions. One common cause is a diet rich in red meat and fat. A complex-carbohydrate diet generally prevents this kind of problem.
HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES
HERBS
GINGER:
An excellent herb for heartburn due to its ability to absorb excess stomach acid. Can be taken in capsule form.
ALOE VERA:
Soothes the stomach when taken in juice or gel form three or four times a day or as needed.
LICORICE ROOT:
The deglycerrhizinated form of licorice root (DGL) is effective in combating heartburn.
PEPPERMINT:
Any sort of mint tea brewed very strongly can reduce symptoms.
SUPPLEMENTS
CALCIUM CARBONATE:
Functions as an antacid.
HYDROCHLORIC ACID:
May be an effective supplement if low stomach acid is the underlying cause of the problem.
FORMULAS THAT YOU CAN MAKE
Equal parts of: Water Mint, Marigold, Sage and a pinch of Ginger. A heaping teaspoonful of the mixed herbs to a cup of boiling water. Take a wineglassful 3 times a day.
HOMEOPATHY
Remedies: First try Arsenicum alb l0x or Iris l0x. Further: China 20x, Ipecac l0x.
Treatment: Take Bryonia l0x and take Arsenicum aib l0x 10 minutes later. This should take care of the heartburn. If it does not, try Iris l0x.
Next Try: Gas and bloating: China l0x.
Indigestion, nausea, inclination to vomit: Ipecac l0x.
DIETARY GUIDELINES
Restrict acidic, irritating and difficult-to-digest foods, red meat, citrus fruits and juices, spicy foods, tomatoes and tomato sauce, and coffee.
At the onset of an attack, drink a glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon. Although a lemon is initially acidic, it is classified as an alkaline ash food. Eat smaller, more frequent meals and avoid overeating.
