High blood pressure is a brutal thief. It can blow your brains out with a sudden stroke, or gradually destroy your heart, blood vessels, and kidneys. It is not a disease, it1s a condition, and for most, it is the price we pay for our unhealthy lifestyles.
Around 60 million Americans have high blood pressure or one quarter of the total U.S. population. This is a clear signal that something's not right about the way we live and eat.
STANDARD PRACTICE
Tens of millions of people are taking drugs to lower their blood pressure. In my opinion, this is insane. Nature has provided much safer and more effective means to control blood pressure.
In addition, doctors recommend that you lose weight, exercise more, decrease salt intake, and restrict the use of alcohol and caffeine. Each of these are important steps.
HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES
HERBS
CAYENNE:
A stimulant of the circulatory system.
GARLIC:
Take garlic capsules. Cloves of fresh garlic are the best but don't let the odor (of your breath get you down). Kyolic brand is great in that it is odorless. Has been shown to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. It also is used as a chelating agent to reduce the buildup of arterial plaque, which can contribute to high blood pressure.
HAWTHORN:
Used for a variety of cardiovascular conditions, including atherosclerosis, high cholesterol serum levels and the constriction of large blood vessels
WOOD BETONY:
Used to relax the circulatory system.
SUPPLEMENTS
COENZYME Q-l0:
Useful in lowering blood pressure.
ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS:
Have been shown to be beneficial for many cardiovascular conditions and are necessary for keeping cholesterol levels down.
POTASSIUM & MAGNESIUM. Increase your consumption of both potassium and magnesium. 1,000 mg per day of elemental magnesium. In addition, you should be eating two or three servings per day of fresh fruits and deep-green vegetables. Magnesium is nature's calcium channel-blocker. It's just as powerful as the drug, without the side effects. Also recommended is magnesium/potassium aspartate.
FISH OILS. Take fish oils, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids. With omega-3 in your bloodstream the blood flows more smoothly, with less resistance. This will result in a drop in blood pressure.

DIETARY GUIDELINES
Reducing salt intake can reduce the retention of fluid and increase blood pressure. Sodium is thought to be a major cause of hypertension. Avoid smoked cheeses and meats, chocolate, animal fats, gravies, and processed foods. Do not consume caffeine, and avoid smoking.
Emphasize a low-fat, high-fiber diet. Excellent foods include oat bran, pectin fruits, bananas, apples, melons, broccoli, cabbage, green vegetables, prunes, beets, carrots, and fish. It has been shown time and again that the incidence of high blood pressure is much lower in vegetarians and those who consume high levels of vegetables, fruits and whole foods.
Fat should comprise no more than 20% of your total daily intake of calories. Fat elevates blood pressure by increasing the thickness of the blood and stimulating hormones that cause the blood vessels to constrict. Fat also increases weight, which usually raises blood pressure.
Studies show that a high-potassium, low-sodium diet can reverse hypertension. To increase your level of potassium, eat oranges, bananas, dried peas, and beans.
