When the Civil War began in 1861, the present state of Arizona was a part of the New Mexico Territory, which was declared part of the Confederacy. The w esternmost battle of the Civil War (and the only one fought in present Arizona) was the battle of Pichaco Pass (1862), in which Union troops defeated the Confederates. Settlement was abandoned when Confederate troops were routed and Union soldiers went ea st to fight in the Civil War. Organized as a territory on February 4, 1864. This region was sometimes called Arizona before 1863, although it was still in the Territory of New Mexico.
