Welcome
to Vermont's oldest web site dedicated entirely to competitive academia and one of the top-rated High School Quiz Bowl web sites in the country. This web page is designed to increase exposure of the
Burlington High School Scholars' Bowl Seahorses (yes, that's right, the Seahorses). We are:
  • The 2001 PANASONIC ACADEMIC CHALLENGE FOURTH-PLACE TEAM
  • The 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001 Vt.-NEA Scholars' Bowl State Champions

Our final 2002-2003 record is 39-13 after losing in the octofinal round of the Vermont State Tournament.

LATEST: A slow start to the final round of a Vermont State Tournament octofinal against Burr and Burton on March 22, 2003 has the Seahorses somewhere they haven't been in seven years -- home for the semifinals. The Bulldogs opened the last nine minutes on a 115-35 lead to turn a 20-point deficit into a 60-point lead and hung on to defeat BHS 225-205 victory. With the loss, Burlington falls short of the state tournament semifinals for the first time in since 1995-96. The Seahorses will conclude their season in the Spring Knowledge Master Open sometime in early April.

AN EARLY EXIT: The Final Four of the Vermont State Tournament will be played on April 5 and, for the first time since 1996, Burlington won't be there. Burr and Burton dominated the first two-thirds of the final round and held on to defeat the Seahorses, 225-205, in a state octofinal on March 22, 2003 at Saint Michael's College. Burlington led by as much as 50 points early and was ahead 85-70 after the first round and 120-100 going to the last round. But the Bulldogs ran off spurts of 50-0 and 45-5 to take a commanding 215-155 advantage into the final minutes. Burlington scored 50 points in six questions to close to 215-205 but couldn't score in the last six questions and Burr and Burton came away with the victory. Sheng Li paced the Seahorses with nine toss-ups and 115 points to move over the 1,000-point plateau for his career. After ending Burlington's run of six consecutive Final Four appearances, BBA went on to earn its first with a quarterfinal victory over Thetford.

STRONG FINISH IN THE GRANITE STATE: Burlington did not start the day well at the Hanover Round Robin on March 8, but eight straight wins did much to make the finish more pleasant. After losing two of its first three games, BHS' A team finished the preliminary round with seven consecutive victories and won a playoff game before dropping a tight contest in the semifinals. A 12-6 loss to Hanover and a 5-3 setback at the hands of Lebanon B had the Burlington team of Isaac Backus, Tobias Crawford, Sheng Li and Brad Moore mired at 1-2 in the early going. Seven easy wins later the Seahorses were in the quarterfinals, where they rallied past Burr and Burton for a 10-7 victory. In the semis, host Hanover eliminated BHS, but not before the Seahorses made a battle of the 10-7 contest. BHS' B team did well early on, opening with a 3-3 record, before finishing with four straight defeats in and a 3-7 mark.
