Business Management/Marketing

Why study business?

A background in business is essential in virtually every area of modern professional employment. BCCC’s business programs are designed for students who plan to transfer their credits to a 4-year college or university to attain a Bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing or Management, for students with immediate career goals, and for those who wish to earn the certificate in Personal Financial Management.

What are BCCC’s business programs?

The Business Management Associate of Applied Science degree program requires 68-70 credits; the Marketing Associate of Applied Science degree program requires 68-69 credits; and the certificate program in Personal Financial Management requires 25 credits.

The Business Management and Business Marketing programs are structured as career programs, and most courses are transferable. Students selecting the Marketing or Management programs do so in their third semesters of study. Students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for entry-level management/marketing trainee positions in business, industry, government, and service fields. Entrepreneurship is also a career possibility for graduates of these programs. Team development and performance, worker empowerment and customer satisfaction through continuous improvement are topics covered in all management/marketing courses.

Some specialized courses in the Management/Marketing programs may not transfer to some 4-year schools. Students whose main reason for attending BCCC is transferability to 4-year programs should see the separate Business Administration Program brochure. Degrees can be earned by taking courses in the evening and on weekends as well as regular day courses.

How does the Personal Financial Management Program prepare me for a job?

This certificate program prepares students to assist professional financial planners who help clients establish strategies for realizing their short-term and long-term financial goals. Personal financial planning is one of the fastest-growing careers in the field of finance. This program also assists persons interested in taking charge of their own financial planning.

What is a typical starting salary?

While salary varies with the exact nature of a particular job, applicants with a Bachelor’s degree can expect $25,000-$34,000 annually; Associate degree and certificate graduates can expect between $16,000 and $20,000. Meaningful work experience greatly affects salary placement and increases.

What is the employment outlook?

The outlook for employment of people with business degrees or certificates is expected to be better than the average for other occupations through the year 2005.

How can a high school student prepare to enter one of these programs?

Tech Prep is an innovative high school-to-college transition program available in most Baltimore City public high schools. Students enrolled in one of the high school Tech Prep programs may be able to take a College course while still in high school; receive BCCC credit for a high school course; apply for the Tech Prep Concurrent Enrollment Scholarship, which covers tuition and books for one course; or apply for a full tuition and books scholarship.
