The Deck Around 1830, a new dance craze came out of the famous French nightclub, the Moulin Rouge. With its high-kicking steps (revealing ladies' petticoats!!!), this daring dance soon swept the country. Around 1958, this deck of cards came out of the famous French card manufacturer, Philibert! With images of beautiful dancers, rich patrons and dignified servers, artist Monique Arietti created an elegant and colorful deck, evoking that earlier time. The edition of the deck here at the gallery has not four aces, but eight! Four of them incorporate small images of objects from the time, while the other four "naughty" aces show dancers from the club, sans clothing (but with strategically-placed suit signs to keep everything rated "R"). We show a non-naughty ace as part of the exhibit. After all, we are on AOL here.

The Cards on Display ![]() A wealthy patron of the Moulin Rouge. The Queen (Dame) of Clubs ![]() A can-can girl! The Jack (Valet) of Diamonds ![]() The doorman. The Ace of Spades ![]() A non-naughty ace (see above). The Joker ![]() The flower girl! The deck's other joker looks like a bellhop, but I assume he is a busboy. The Card Back ![]() A horse and carriage, via which wealthier patrons would arrive.
